I do have one of my Houdans that is slightly unusual, 'Freak'. She has a 6th toenail growing out of the second toe. Now just from basic genetics I believe that the 5th toe on Houdans-which appears to be a copy of the 3rd toe-is a result of SHH genes (sonic hedgehog), so that the presence on the second toe makes sense. I was just wondering, since the breed has been established for so long, is this indicator of extra promoters common or uncommon in the breed? I know that in a show they will DQ for less than 5 toes...what about just an extra nail ?? does that fall under general bird DQ-lack of symmetry?

Hi all. I was wondering when Houdans normally start laying. Mine are about 27 weeks old, and I haven't seen anything yet.

Here are some pics I just took of my LF White Houdan roo....he's still in quarantine for another week or so...I am pretty sure he was in the sun a lot and/or fed corn??? He's had two baths so far and now he's in heavy molt. Overall, his type is not too bad....for such a rare bird. Now I just need to find him some ladies.

Well, once the weather cools off a little bit (it's near 100 here today)--he's going to get the blue whitening shampoo and another mite treatment...so we'll see if he lightens up...I hope so....I'm not used to seeing brassy white birds.
