Late spring, this year, my neighbor took on around 60 baby chicks from Southern States that they couldn't get rid of. They are now around 4 months old. I was at his house yesterday and fell in love with a chicken that I have never seen before and hope someone may be able to help me identify. I am pretty sure that it is a pullet. Her body feathers are a real dark color, almost black. The feathers that start where her neck connects to her body and the rest of her head are white. And she has a little fuzzy black "beard" or "waddle"...
She is so adorable. I don't know if this will be her true coloring after 1st molt or what. I am having no luck finding out what she is. I called SS and they said that they ordered their chicks from Mt. Healthy. So, I called Mt. Healthy and the lady said they don't sell a standard size breed like that, that she was probably a bantam of some sort. She said that in the spring they sell assorted, straight run bantam packages , that they (Mt. Healthy),don't even know what they are. And sometimes if a feed store, pet store etc. buys large #'s of laying and meat chicks, whatever bantam chicks that were left over from that day will just get sent out with the other chicks to the companies. So she said it is probably a bantam chicken from a deal like that. I am trying to get a hold of my neighbor today to see if I can take a pic of her or buy one from him if he has more than one, though one is all I saw. If you could hazzard a guess I would greatly appreciate it. I hope to be able to get a pic of her today or tomorrow. They just run around the yard, so may be easier said than done.
