If they do not fill out the first box, can they survive winter in one box?

Yes they can.

Give them enough food and pollen substitute so they fill the whole box with honey and brood.

Thanks will do, but what do I do about ants? Was feeding them and a bee was making a racket checked it and an ant was biting it's proboscis.

Never had an ant problem

I think the biting was a accident but they are attracted to the syrup

I sprinkle cinnamon generously around the hive to deter ants. They are always wanting to get into all those goodies.

I use top bars and find ants between my bars and lid all the time but they never seem to go in the hive. I have had them take the syrup.

I have not had a problem yet. I will keep a look out.
I find an occasional dead bull and at the entryway, but no ant robbers.
