A Bielefelder Thread !

Any comb other than what is listed in the standard is a DQ. Sprigs are a DQ. I don't know the genetics but if you breed birds with sprigs it spreads like wildfire.

Here's a different angle of the one that looks like the point may be flopped over.

On the pullet with the lopped comb what do you mean by it can be fixed? Do you mean by breeding?

^ Apparently my stock came from birds with sprigs.

A hen breeding as it is allowable for a flopped comb. YES it can be fixed with breeding. I have White Leghorns and they really have HUGE combs and even the cocks combs flop over. I breed for a normal looking comb and all my WL have gotten to where the combs are not as flopped anymore.

My guess is all your birds were crossed with something that had carnation comb at some point. All you birds could carry it to some degree. Just cull for it. I think that is just from a carnation comb issue.

Rippy, I really appreciate your invaluable advice and input. Thank you so much.

Cody

I'm wondering if it is coming from one of the breeds that was used to create Bielefelders.
Anyhoo, Thank you again.

Just an afterthought. My birds are from two different breeders one North Carolina the other Louisiana and I have the 2011 and 2013 import. Both imports have the sprigs and carnation comb.
For what that info is worth.

Unfortunately all Biels in this country trace back to the same source. It sounds to me like the Greenfire Farm imports may have carried the gene and 'satellite breeders' haven't done too good of a job breeding it out of their birds. I too am supposed to have birds from both imports and both resulted in cockerels with sprigs, but also cockerels with clean, straight combs. I guess the best thing we can do is really focus on breeding this trait out as much as possible.

Rippy, they're definitely sprigs. I do have some with clean combs.

Hi Cody & DMRippy - my DH and I both thought "Gee, those look like Pene Carnation combs!" I never knew Carnation showed in anything but Penes but guess it does!
