A Bielefelder Thread !

My 3 month olds were suffering in the heat yesterday. Tomorrow I'll ice their waterer. I can relate becsuse our AC is struggling and it's too warm gor me, too.

I lost one of my Biel breeding cockerels this past week. I suspect that one or more of my NN Turken cockerels ran him pretty hard, but I also know that this particular Biel did not handle the heat well, and I'm sure that was a contributing factor to his death. His loss hit me hard. He was the biggest of my boys and I had big plans for him.

Sorry to hear that . I had two of my pullets attacked by something inside my fenced in free range area. Lost one and the other one is blind in one eye and limping and its tuff losing nice birds. These were future breeding stock.

Yea, sorry to hear Desertchic. I lost two of my best looking cockerels back to back a month or so ago.
This was one of them.

Wow! He really was a beauty! This was the first chicken I've ever lost (not counting the ones I've butchered for dinner). The fact that he was so beautiful and sweet made it that much harder.

We actually consumed the first of my Biel cockerel culls last night. I can honestly say that was the best tasting chicken we've eaten so far. I've now made NN Turken, Barred Rock and now the Biel, and the Biel was the most tender and flavorful, though the NN was slightly meatier and had crispier skin. I use the same recipe each time so we can make an honest comparison. I know understand the Bielefelder's "uber chicken" status.

Yea. I ate a culled Biele a couple weeks ago. I thought it was quite tasty. Honestly I couldn't tell the difference but that's just my taste buds. I've been eating BR's, RIR, and Ameraucana . I didn't cook a side by side for comparison.

They're all excellent eating to me!

Our unrelated 4 month old pullets:

We have a 4 month old Biele cockerel that is a brother to the pullet group but we will put these girls under Franz when they are old enough since he is our single, unrelated cockerel. I am expecting two other 4 month pullets from a Birdman this week where we can put them with our younger cockerel. Then we wait for CHICKS :)

I'm sorry to hear that, too. Very sad. Thank goodness we are back down to normal hot instead of hot hot here again. I am thinking of moving our Bieles to a different pen that doesn't have as much of a southern exposure.

Hey TN that's a good looking bird. I see it has a bit of white on a tail feather. I've got a male that has this also. Anyone know if that would be a negative trait to have? Or would you lose points for this if there was a standard and if it was shown.

Yes, white in the tailfeathers is typically bad and gets worse with each molt.
