A Bielefelder Thread !

Hi Cody A,
if you have something like a winter where your are, wait for spring with breeding. You will get better results. My theory is, that the boys have a quite low testosteron level. They are big and have in to produce a lot. Somehow Vitamin D is connected to the testosteron production. For Vitamin D the birds need sun light and lots of fresh greens. In winter both greens and sun light are rare.... and maybe this is the reason why Desert Chick has very active roosters. I presume that in Arizone sun light is a more or less unlimited resource.

I had no idea! Thanks for this info! (And it sure does explain why all of my cockerels are so dang frisky.) And yes, we do have a lot of sunlight here....and warmth. Other than a few cold days so far, our November (winter) temps have been in the 70s in the daytime and the 40s at night.

I am so excited. GFF brought some Westfälische Totleger to America. They are maybe not that interessting for people who love Bielefelders but they are listed as endangerd breed with only 250 roosters and a little over 1 000 hens left. I know that most of the birds that GFF sells wouldn't win ribbons in show, but the pic of the young rooster on facebook looks quite good. The oportunity to double or tripple the quantity of birds by interducing them to the US is so exciting.
I would love to see some more breeds sailing the ocean. Does someone here know if GFF is open to suggestions?

Just send Josette a message at the order email. [email protected] She will either pass it on or help you with the correct contact info. She is very nice.

I see..... that is the real name of the new Deathlayer I saw on their facebook. Beautiful! I love Greenfire Farms and their chickens.

Thanks, RedBanks, I wish I could talk them into our lokal longcrowing breed - Bergische Kräher and into the Ramelsloher. The longcrower is a backyard panda last numbers where 62 roosters and 267 hens for a breed that has roots going back to the crucaders.
