A Bielefelder Thread !

I'm starting to think I'm the only person on the planet who owns chickens that really don't appreciate misters. My birds avoid that mist like their life depends on it.

That is really funny strange! My Silkies love the misters and stand under them. The little Black goofball Silkie will stand so long under the mist she looks like she dove into a swimming pool!

Close, mine is a bantam Orpington. I think they look pretty similar to the cochins but without the feathered feet. Mine is called Paloma; she is sweet too. I'm glad she got the chance to be a mom.

What? Now why didn't I know there were bantam Orpingtons?! How cute is that? I think they are coming up with bantam everything. :p

Invest in a stand alone portable mister like Orbit or Arctic Cool at Home Depot or Lowe's - around $15 and hook up to a hose and run the mist all day in a shady area - the hens will be under it most of the day. I like the stand-alone misters that usually have a couple mist nozzles on the end - it's more than enough to keep the hens comfortable - well, as comfortable as one can be in the 100's.

I have heard of these, and I really do think I will look at them this yr.! Thanks for the reminder!

Here's my ...BIG Bie Pullet. With the big girls now. They are still trying to figure out if they like her or not. She is as big as these girls..some are pullets, some hens..love love the photo bomb one of my RSL's eyeball peeking up at us. lol..

She wants back into the grow out pen! lol..

I picked up an arctic cool mister at Home Depot for about $13. I was disappointed at first because it didn't seem to give off too much mist, but that is what I could afford. The hens seem to like it. It is positioned where they normally lie about in the shade. Seems like they get closer to it every day. Today, I also wet down the dirt/grass, as well as the tree leaves in that area.

They seemed to be more comfortable.

The water mist from the Orbit or the Arctic Cool is a very fine fine fine mist - it conserves water to use the mist and the hens eventually find it very refreshing and sometimes you'll see them directly in the mist's spray path. I have one Silkie that loves to drench herself in water whether it's from a mister or letting the nipple valve waterer dribble down her face and down her chest. I bet she'd be easy training to take showers! When she was a pullet we had her indoors for 3 months in chicken diapers and she got accustomed to us washing her tush feathers every night and blow dryed so I guess she likes water now??!! She's not afraid of water the way our other hens are.

Has anyone ever used a regular sprinkler in or adjacent to their run? I think that there are some that water using a fine spray.

Hmm.....I've never actually seen one that sprayed a mist. For me though, if I were willing to consider a sprinkler, I'd save my money and just leave the hose on the ground with enough water pressure for a continuous trickle to create a small stream/pool of water for them to scratch around in. It's better for the chickens if their feathers don't get too wet too often lest they lose their protective oil coating, and chickens cool themselves through their feet, so standing, walking and scratching in the moist ground and water makes them happen. My chickens literally follow my hose around wherever I most it to scratch through the mud...as long as it's in the shade, of course. The soft flow of the water also provides them with fresh, cool drinking water straight from the tap.
