A Bielefelder Thread !

Are Bielefelders recognized by the APA?? Just wondering.
A breed can't be an APA breed until someone has bred them in the US for at least 5 years, always breeding true, but that's only the first loop we have to jump thruogh! So they're not *officially* a registered breed yet.:)
Shoot. There are over 500 pges left. Sorry, you've probably had your question answered a million times over!

I think we found out what the yellow one (with gray on his back and wings) is. He has five toes on his feathery feet. Someone posted a photo here of a Salmon Faverolle (no idea how to spell it). It looks just like him. He's a fun one. We've had some small amount of poking but it hasn't continued more than a day. I'm hoping they will end up compatible.

So... many... posts...

Just wanted to drop in to introduce myself and Oppenheimer, who was a free chick from Murray McMurray last year. He's currently about 9 months old. Photo-dump!! 20200729_093748.jpg 20210324_215608.jpg 162914622_10158448336434023_5562827154681252545_n.jpg 20210303_100921.jpg

Oppenheimer is a beauty. My roo is coming up on his second birthday and just seems to keep growing. My son named him Cogburn. He is about the calmest brute of a roo ever.
A question for the Bielefelder faithful:
how often have you had a hen go broody? One of my 2 year olds is currently sitting on a nest of 8 eggs. I thought she’d been eaten while free ranging only to find her 10 days later on a nest made in my straw supply about 5’ up off the ground. I didn’t even think my pudgy hens could get up there! I’m going to let her hatch them if we make it that far.

Hello! I'm new here and looking into Bielefelders for our homestead here in north Idaho. They look like a very promising dual-purpose breed from what I can find online. I'd like to know about how old Biels have to get to weigh in the 5 lb range. I've found a couple weights for 12 & 13 week Biels from much earlier in this thread that lead me to believe they might average 5 lbs live weight at about 18 weeks, but I'd like to know from someone who has them if possible!

Does anyone have 16-20 week weight averages for Bielefelders? Thanks!

Hopefully, someone can answer your specific question. I've not had any for few years now, but I remember they ate and grew a lot in those 1st 5 months. After that their growth and food consumption slowed down.

Bieles did well in cold- not the heat. Depending time of year when they reach maturity will dramatically affect the number of months it takes to lay that 1st egg. Several spring-hatched chicks took 10+ months to lay their 1st egg. (reached maturity when the days were growing shorter). .... but my September hatched Bieles started laying regularly end of February - March.

We're planning to order chicks end of August/early September, so that's encouraging info. Thanks!
