A Bielefelder Thread !

Turlock is just down the road! I am right next to Galt if that helps. We have relatives in Merced so maybe on my way down there sometime I can swing by. I will let you know when they start laying.

Thank You,

I just ordered a few chicks from Greenfire Farms. Black bresse and Bielefelders. Does anyone know if they send extra chicks or just what you order?
Almost every breeder will include extra chicks when they ship for warmth. Sometimes you get extra of what you order. Sometimes you get excess Cream Legbar roos.

It just depends upon the size of the order. You can contact Greenfire and request that they don't put in any extra chicks for warmth. I usually just take what they send and if it is not a breed I want, then I will give it to a friend.

I would fine 2-3-5 dead a day for a few days straight. I know there are a few from you still running around in the brooder but I have been too sick to inventory and see what I have.

What happened? How did they get wet? That is awful.
I put some 4 week goldsmith outside the other day and we had a huge thunderstorm the next day. 3 of them did not come in for shelter. and were soaked . They were lifeless and I took them and put them under the heat lamp and 2 of them made it.

Hey, everyone, I was hoping I could ask a question here. :) I bought two Legbar chicks from a breeder nearby, but as they grew in their feathers I started to notice that they didn't look much alike. I talked with the breeder and he and I now both think he accidentally gave me one Legbar and one Bielefelder! Can anyone confirm that that's what my little Violet is? She is 6 weeks old today.

Here she is around the time I got her at about 2 weeks old, too, if that helps. She's on the right and the Legbar is on the left:

She sure does act like a Bielefelder, if what I'm reading about them is true! She is always at the feeder, chowing away! She's pretty calm, but she does shy away from my hand if I reach for her. I think that's more from not being socialized as a chick, though, because she has quickly warmed up to me and has been hopping into my lap. From what he says, she would be directly from Greenfire Farms' stock. If I'm understanding correctly, he bought hatching eggs from someone that buys overflow from GFF and he didn't actually have Bielefelders before then.

Anyway, any help is appreciated! :) Thanks.

...Didn't mean to scare everyone off...

The breeds look very similar at that age other than the crest. It does look like a Bielefelder. It should be very clear in about three more weeks. The Bielefelders are much larger than the Legbars. Their hackle feathers are also more colorful. They are a very nice calm breed that lays large brown eggs. I hope you enjoy her what ever she is.

Thank you! Violet definitely will be enjoyed no matter what. :)

I actually did some research on the breed and quite like them. :D At the moment, I don't have the buildings or pens for breeding birds, but have definitely added Bielefelders to my wishlist. I keep saying, my barn is full and it isn't even built yet.

Anyway, I'll post pictures in a few weeks and we'll see then, if that's alright. She wasn't exactly what I was going for, but now I'm really hoping she is a Bielefelder!
