A Bielefelder Thread !

No one wanted to co-operate on picture day.
I have... 8(?) cockerels and only 3 pullets. These guys are almost 5 months now. I have no idea who to keep, but I did notice one of the cockerels has a partial white tail feather, so he will be going. Some have not so appealing combs.

Isn't it funny how camera shy chickens can be? That said, you have some really beautiful birds! I don't know what you plan to do with your "disqualified" cockerels, but I can personally attest to the fact that their meat tastes fantastic.

Chick update
My Biel boy at 10 days old

He's feathering beautifully but not really gotten much bigger. For comparison, here is the white (splash maybe?) Cochin chick that is supposed to be the same age within a week

She's not nearly as feathered but she is so big!

They are so cute. Today was one of those days when I questioned my sanity. I have 20 chicks, 17 CLs and 3 Bielefelders. Normally I put them out all day.... today it rained ALL day and it got cool..... let's just say it wasn't an easy day.

Well, my Bielefelder over Silkie mixes are 4 weeks old now and doing really well. I'm quite pleased with both their growth rates and their feathering out. Three of them have become a bit more elusive, spending their time with the other 24 chicks companions, while one is a total snuggle bug with me.

Uno - the first chick to hatch and quite independent.

The second one to hatch, but I haven't thought of a name yet. I'm still not sure of gender either. A very alert chick.

Chick 3 is a little friendlier, and fairly assertive. I'm pretty sure this one's a cockerel.

Chick 4 and my favorite; very friendly and affectionate. Notice the pink comb on this one?

Right now they all weigh about 7-8 ounces. I love their feathering patterns so far, and they're just beginning to get some of the Silkie feathering characteristics. I can't wait to see how they look in two more weeks when they have their next photo session.

Well.... you could have the answer for the "broody Bielefelder" question. Aren't they gorgeous? Your favorite is so cute. Isn't there always one out of every bunch that steals your heart?

I see this thread is a year old but I'm hoping to get an answer. I'm new to chicken rearing but am particularly interested in this breed. I am currently trying to get chicks, girls and one boy. I also want some americaunas. Does anyone know, do these breeds get a long well? They would all be about the same age, no more than a week apart.

Bielefelders tend to get along well with any breed but they all establish a pecking order. Bielefelder roosters are great with people and other chickens. Love them
