A Bielefelder Thread !

I just have to reiterate how incredibly impressed I am with the cockerels/roosters of this breed. Today I opened the coop door belonging to my smooth and frizzled Easter Eggers (18 weeks old) so they could free range with the rest of my flocks for the first time. It was stressful! I have some Dorking mixed hens that have proven surprisingly mean, and they immediately descended on my EEs and began to terrorize them all.

Then came my breeder Bielefelder cockerel, Hansel. I watched in amazement as he rounded up all of the EEs, walked them calmly back into their coop, got all of them to quietly feed, and then began escorting them in groups to his favorite parts of the yard. He was more assertive with my EE cockerels than with the pullets, but incredibly gentle with all of them overall. And when those Dorking girls started moving in for another attack he firmly let them know he'd have none of it. He called over some of the other older girls in the yard, Australorps and Barred Rocks, and had them form a secondary barrier of protection around the EEs as they gradually began to explore. It was really impressive!

LOVE this breed!

DesertChic, your Hansel sounds AH-MA-ZING. we would love to have offspring of his- perhaps his wonderful qualities might show up in one of them! Do you by any chance sell hatching eggs?

Hopefully Hansel has an equally wonderful Gretel as that temperament MUST be bred!!!!! What a lovely, lovely story - must have brought tears to your eyes to see it happen!

Not at this time....mainly because my girls have been so slow to reach POL. I think I'm starting to get eggs from them now, but I honestly can't be sure since I haven't actually seen any of them enter the nesting boxes and a lot of my girls from various flocks share the same nesting boxes. Perhaps in the springtime?

Actually, I do have a wonderful Gretel...and even a Gidget...and both girls are incredibly sweet. Gretel is the talker of the group and makes the most adorable little noises when we handle her, as if she's having some kind of gossipy conversation. She and Gidget work in tandem with the more nervous pullets in my other flocks to coax them into joining the group instead of hiding away, but Hansel is the one who really works on rounding everyone up and herding them towards food, the best dust bathing places, and treats.

Thanks!! I'll check in with you again in the springtime... Sounds like Hansel is going to get his own fan club!!

Amen to that! Let the bidding wars begin LOL!!!!!!

Handsome boy! He's such a stinker to photograph! I'm trying to get daily pics for a time lapse. Getting a chick to hold a pose? Is there a trick? Lol

I usually have the most luck with them when I hold them for a bit first to calm them, and then gently place them where I want to photograph them....and then I take A LOT of photos so I can select the best one for documenting.
