A Bielefelder Thread !

These are my Bielefelder eggs that came in the mail today. Is the color difference pretty normal? There are two that obviously don't match, and they are all smaller than I thought they would be. I have a red sexlink that lays bigger eggs..... Could they just be pullet eggs? I guess we'll see what hatches out. ^_^

Yes I have seen my Bielefelders lay a light colored egg before just not very often.

It sounds to me like someone may be selling pullet eggs for hatching. Did you weigh them? In my experience, I've had the greatest luck hatching large fowl eggs that weigh 1.80 ounces or more. As far as the variation in color is concerned, there can be differences in color, but that cream colored egg seems like far too great a variation. All of my Biel girls lay deeper brown eggs, with one of them laying more of a pinkish-brown egg....none that light.

all six of our girls lay a medium brown egg. None of ours look those colors because they are darker than those. Later we can post a photo of the eggs we get. All of our Biele hens have been laying 63 to 73 g eggs.

Okay, we'll have to see what happens when they hatch.

Sadly I don't have a scale yet.

Here are some compared to my 10 month old red sexlink's egg.
The biggest Biele
400

The smallest Biele
400

The RSL
400

All of them in a standard Large size egg carton.
400

I don't think I will keep any of the chicks from these eggs. Except maybe for food.

The smaller Bielefelder egg is more than likely a pullet egg.

Re not having a scale - if you are a breadmaker, this is your perfect excuse to order a little digital scale from Amazon! I ordered a really inexpensive (like under $15) "Eat Smart" Precision Pro Digital scale so that I could weigh ingredients for my bread instead of measuring (it has made ALL the difference in my bread - no more dense, yucky loaves that you could use as a baseball base or even a hockey puck if you really need to!). I use a very small glass dish, weigh the dish empty, push "tare" to reset it to zero, put the egg in the dish and it gives you the exact weight of only the egg.

How cool is that????!!!!!!!
