A Bielefelder Thread !

I can't believe I'm saying this, but something that looks like it comes from the movie "Aliens" is pretty cool!!!!! Then again, I'm hoping to see some nice spidery veins in my first ever batch of Black/Blue/Splash Marans that I set on the 8th (my Biels are still WAY too young). Best of luck to both of us!!!!
I love my BBS Marans, they are some of the prettiest chickens I have! Good Luck!

Since you guys are the experts- can you ease tell me if Pat here is a pullet or cockerel? She looked like a Patricia at hatch, but, now I'm not so sure!

Thanks!

If this chick is not a pullet then I would like to know because it has the stripe down the back and does not have the dot on the head. For that reason I say pullet but the overall color has me guessing.

I know! Her markings aren't as distinct as my others

Hi @gotro17 ,

It's a pullet - notice what we like to call the "mascara" on her eyes. Cockerels don't get that. I haven't seen a Biele pullet have less obvious chipmunk stripes before...I'd be curious as to how she feathers out. Please keep us posted. Hopefully it's not a mix.

Yes- I agree... Thank you. I am only keeping her because of sentimental value. I accidentally cracked her egg when I candled on Day 10- It was a decent dent and spider web crack at the air cell end. I repaired it with coconut wax. She developed well enough and made it to lockdown... I pretty much kissed her goodbye then, thinking it was the last I'd see of her. Low and behold, she pipped....then stalled. I am not in the practice of helping (learned the hard way), but I figured I played a part in getting her in this mess, so, after 2 hours of stalled zipping (and heading the wrong way), I assisted her zip and she finished on her own. She was super sticky and attached to the egg for hours. I put a strawberry basket on top of her to protect her from the others, in order to give her time to detach herself from her shell... I thought I'd lose her for sure. Clearly we made it! I was excited to see the eyeliner (what I've called it) and the striping...she came from a breeding pen- I'll write the breeder and see what he says. Thank you for your help!

Okay, we'll have to see what happens when they hatch.
Sadly I don't have a scale yet.
Here are some compared to my 10 month old red sexlink's egg.
The biggest Biele

The smallest Biele

The RSL

All of them in a standard Large size egg carton.

I don't think I will keep any of the chicks from these eggs. Except maybe for food.
Here is one of our Biele eggs on a standard size coffee cup saucer to compare color and size. This one got frozen by accident :) so it was on the counter to photograph. This is a pretty standard representation of our six Biele hens egg color and size.

Wow! We have 6 pullet chicks and 2 cockerel babies- we are so excited for our little flock. What are your thoughts in keeping two boys? Please tell me you love your Biels! We have another laying flock with a Cream legbar rooster (he has 3 legbar pullets, Australorp, GSL, GLW, Orpingtons and am EE!), but, wanted a pure flick where the hens could go broody and our girls could experience all that.

Yes, we do love our Bieles. They are large loveable birds. The girls are not quite hens yet, will be in April. We have the six girls and two boys as well. One of the boys has the carnation sprigs on the back of his comb, so he will be put in our EE pen. But our other boy is a beautiful large boy! they both got along great, but we don't want the sprigs to be bred and had to remove Franz from the pen. Fritz and the six almost Biele hens are in a pen by themselves. We are hoping the eggs are fertile as we will put some in our cabinet incubator for the Easter Hatch A long here on BYC. We also have just two non crested cream legbar hens that we will put in with the EEs and Franz :) We have a beautiful EE rooster that is a chimera (two different halves of male chicken in one bird :) ) who is a very docile boy as well. I am sure he and Franz will do well together in the EE Pen so we can focus on breeding some nice Biele babies :)

A Chimera, that is so cool!!! Can you share a pic!? have you bred him to see if he father babies that look like one half or the other more or if they look like they came from a mix of what he is (instead of a chimera)
