Hey Y'all!

My hubby and I live in the city of Austin, Texas...the Live Music capitol of the world as they say 'round here. Our 4 Gold Sex-Links are trying to make it BIG here in this music town but the competition is fierce and their "sound" just isn't being appreciated. They practice every morning between 9 a.m. and 11:30 in the backyard but so far have yet to make it to the stage. The girls definitely have a following here in this suburban neighborhood amongst the younger generation but the older folks here are mixed. The girls work hard to appeal to everyone and have even gone so far as to give away eggs at all of their free performances in an effort to win over the crowd but there is still work to be done. In the meantime, we manage the girls the best we can and cater to their diva demands to keep them happy. Frozen watermelon on the half rind, pure rain water, locally harvested meal worms, organic feed...you name it...anything to keep them focused on their craft. To their credit, these girls never get down about things; they keep their beaks to the ground and eyes to the sky, knowing that any day will be their big break onto the scene.

:)

Gosh, seems like everybody is a music critic nowadays. Maybe they just have to take their show on the road - get an audition for "Chickens Got Talent."

I totally enjoyed your intro, best of luck to the girls in making it to the big time!

If you would like to share their rise up the charts with others in TX, you can make an appearance on your state thread:

Good luck converting the critics to your side of the aisle!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas. Gold Sex Link is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those four girls.) If you haven't done so already, definitely our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thanks y'all for the kind welcome! I have learned so much here already and really appreciate the community. I wish I could meet so many members face to face! :)

My four girls have all just started laying this past month and so far we are consistently getting 3 eggs a day with a fourth every other day. We even had a giant double yolker last week. It's been absolutely wonderful passing up the egg fridge at the grocery store...I even park in a different spot of the lot and enter the store from a different door now that I don't need to get eggs, incidentally...this also makes me avoid the ice cream aisle!

It's been wretchedly hot here but the girls are handling it well. Every night we fill old juice bottles with water and freeze them overnight and then throw them into the coop throughout the day. They nestle right up to them and enjoy the cool. I've even found them sitting on the frozen watermelon quarters we give them instead of eating it! Quirky little beings.

Take care!

You're welcome. Glad to hear that the girls are doing well.)
