(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, my in-laws have had chickens for 3 years or so. It's always been a relatively small flock of birds, maybe 4 or 5 at the most, however I was TERRIFIED of the darn things just scared silly. I couldn't even get in the house because they roosted there every night by the door. Well my husband and I had the idea last year to get our kids and myself all pet chicks to raise and maybe help with our fear of them. Well it worked. So fast forward to the past couple of months we had to pin up our two younger rooms because our original male wasn't have any of the tom foolery those boys were up to lol.so after some research and discovering that to help with the fighting birds we need more hens(duh,I know). I had been searching for the rite breed for us and one day a friend asked for some eggs to incubate and that started the whole hatching our own idea. Between my father in law having absolutely nothing to do with his days and no desire to and then I became infatuated with this no venture as well. So my husband and I talked and both agree that his father was actually excited about the idea. So we bought an incubator and now we are hatching our first chick and have so many questions that need answering.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 3 hens 1 of which is being broody as all get out and 1 rooster. We have 7 eggs incubating and one is in the hatching process. Unfortunately we lost my roo last night, I never knew I could cry over a chicken like I did.
(3) What breeds do you have?
2 lavender olive eggers hens
1 barred Plymouth Rock he
1 banty Easter egger roo
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Having our own eggs and being able to give my father in law something to look forward to when incubating
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Crafting, all kinds of crafting lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 3 children, 2 girls 11 and 15 and 1 boy 14. I have been married for 14 years and with my husband for 16 going on 17 years. We live with his parents we have 2 cats and 4 dogs. My children are ecstatic about hatching eggs, my hubby not so much.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found it through Google. What made me join is, well, the struggle is real, I can do all the research in the world but it still gets a little confusing.
