R2elk what is the oldest tom you have butchered and how did he cook up? Do they get a lot tougher with age like roosters?
SideKick is bothering me. Without JJ he has turned into a potential Center piece for a Sunday Dinner Table.
I think he is 4.
I butchered a 4 year old tom that completely fed himself for around 8 months. He did not get any processed feed from me but he had lots of Russian Olives along with Sweet Clover and other weed and grass seeds and fresh green grass available.
I don't cook turkeys because if I am going to eat turkey, I want it with all the trimmings and that is just too much work for me for just one person. The person that I gave him to claimed that he was absolutely delicious and they even boiled his bones for the broth. I believe that they use the deep fryer method to cook turkeys and they eat lots of them every year.
Without JJ in the way, I have been expecting Sidekick to try to establish himself as the head turkey and that means dethroning you. I would agree that he is an excellent candidate to invite to dinner.
