A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I'm still getting used to the site. I'm finding it harder to navigate. Maybe "harder" isn't the right word, it seems to take me longer to find threads or forums I'm interested in.
Sounds like you've been busy....of course you need to post pictures!!

I have a question. Should I let my turkeys roost in the tree or should I make sure they are securely penned up each night? These guys are only 2.5 months old and I don't know if they are 1) mature enough 2) smart enough to get away from predators 3) or if the risk is minimal. They ARE in the pen tonight cause I need to get some sleep! And I wouldn't be getting much if I have to worry that someone is getting an early turkey dinner.

At that age they are in prime, "I wanna commit Suicide" mode. Make them go in. Mine that age still live in a rubber room for their own protection. I have some at nearly 3 months that want out so badly, but I want them alive just as much.

I always pen up my poultry.

Welcome back!

I find it "different" I would be lying if I said the new version is as "fun" to use and visit on as the old one. Hopefully, I will get use to it.

Ralph, fun is the right word. I'm still learning. Hopefully once I get used to it ... I'll find it easier/more fun.
Flashpoint, my girls get their bedtime treat, BOSS, when they go into their pen for the night. Needless to say they are usually hanging out by the pen in the evening. You might want to establish a bedtime routine with them.

I'd pen them every night. I had a few last summer that insisted on roaring in the trees if I didn't get them penned up early enough. I would do everything I could to get them down and in at night.

Thanks!

2-1 odds it was a coon...

I lost 14 birds last night...A Neighbor will be losing a dog soon.
Oh man, that's terrible. :(

Sorry to hear that Ralphie. I don't think a coin would dig under your fence but who knows. I didn't think they killed for fun either but one killed 11 of my birds and only ate 2
I have read that this time of year, the mother coons are teaching their babies how to hunt. So they kill a lot more for practice than they need to actually eat.

I agree with everyone else. It helps if you can get to them at just the right level of dusk darkness. Before they get themselves up in a tree where you can't reach them.

Video of a fisher attack on a coop. This was my cousins video, she took it about 15 miles from me...

She lost all her birds a week later to this thing..

That's so sad that she lost all of them. What kind of wire is that on the bottom of her coop? It looks like smaller holes than chicken wire, but it doesn't appear to be hardware cloth. Was that wire where the fisher found the breach, or did it get in some other way?
