A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Morning folks. My chicken/turkey sitter let my turkey girls in to my garden. Not veggies, native. Daisy ate my whole painted japanese fern stand and a good portion of my native ginger. Oh well....

I threw them in the big yard yesterday. They both spent hours in a sunny dust bath. Boy did they enjoy themselves! Took our evening stroll. They practically charged the gate & ran down the driveway. Poor girls sure miss their routine when I'm gone!

I think you need my Tom from the Guinea Gulag to help maintain order over your hens when you are gone.

His future is very bleak here.

Something unheard of this year.

Bug-eyed babies a day early! There are 4 right now, a black, white and two kind of like this one.

Why would she do that? Is she new? Sorry you lost your ferns. I know what it's like to work hard on a garden and then have "somebody" ruin it. :(

Congrats on your early turkeys!

I got an early "turkey" yesterday. I had set this unusually small turkey egg. I didn't think it was a chicken cuz it was identical to the turkey egg color and spots. And none of my chickens lay an egg that is at all similar.

This is the egg:

Here is the hatched egg next to a regular turkey egg for size comparison.

Well I'm sure you all know where I'm going with this...

The turkeys are due to hatch one week from today. Last night I heard a loud bird. Thought it was from my parakeets downstairs who were supposed to be asleep. Figured I better go see if one was in distress. That's when I heard the sound again, coming from my incubator!

Here's my little surprise chicken:

I have no idea how long it was was in there, turner going and everything. It was dry and fluffy when I found it. Thankfully it didn't poop! :gig

And it's a good thing I already have boughten chicks in a brooder, so it had somewhere to go last night.

Aww Finnie...what a sweet surprise! No my sitter isn't new. Daisy just lost her mind. The ferns were just coming up. Must have been young, tender & tasty. She doesnt bother them when they are mature.

Ralphie...what cuties! Any idea what the mystery color is?? If I ever get a Tom ( doubt it) I need a proven TOLORANT. Not a gulag refuge! I've told Holm repeatedly I'd take Mr. T! By the way, where is Holm?

@Finnie congrats on the surprise chicky.

@duluthralphie :thumbsup on new poults.

@memphis sorry about the garden. I still have spare bourbon toms. And will have a few narri poults soon.

Lost one poult out of my first two. The other is in with chicks now.
Had a Tom not acting right over the weekend. So I isolated him and if he wasn't better by today I was gonna butcher him. But he died last night. He was going on 6 years old. Didn't use him to breed last 2 years he was just the yard bird.

Fired up 2nd cabinet 1202. Ran into issue metal trays that are with them are to long and hit the pivot bar and I can't use Turner. Quail and pheasant trays fit rail spacing tight and are rigid enough to work. My turkey/chicken egg trays are not as rigid and fall thru. Thinking cutting some hardware cloth down for support. Set 60 turkey eggs today.

I got to move my 3 3 week old turkey poults and their chickie friends outside in the grow out pen yesterday
.... I put up a fence to keep them separated from the bunch born March 2nd........ well the Littles ran right thru the fence and played with the big girls. Sigh luckily they ran back in too..

little goofballs!
Everyone was still good as of this evening.
I am worried about my two older turkeys, I have 2 hens one thst is 6 months and one that is 4 months, they both started showing signs of a cold maybe? Runny nose and coughing with swollen patches under the eyes??? I don't see yellow droppings so I hope it isn't anything serious. I have started them on antibiotics and they do not apear to be getting worse so I am hoping they get over it.

Looks like eggs are candling well!

A hen today was being velociraptor-broody and hissing and biting. I thought maybe she had some eggs but no, all that over a pile of poop and rocks she gathered up. I dumped some cool water on her to get her to stop being a dummy and a brat.

Hello again turkey lovers.:frow
I am still having troubles hatching turkeys. I have no clue whats going on.
I have 2 Bronze heritage hens and 1 broad breasted bronze. I have lost 8 to drowning after internal pipping, also 4 did not pip internally. At first I had my humidity to high.
I am running it dry now and humidity is about 38%. My hatcher is running about 70%
Temps 99.5 .They are externally pipping on about day 22 and hatching on day 26.
I have about 16 successful hatches so far.
2 of the ones that drowned, drowned after external Pipp,so I am having to assist most because they are becoming what I'm going to call egg bound.
No room in egg to move and peck there way out.
?? Temp to high??
