A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Mercury is not the only thing I'd worry about when eating a fish from this far down stream in the Mississippi. Especially a catfish. Blah.

Off in search of sausage & kraut!!

Rjohns...seems it's a hassle & expensive to feed the way you want. How about trying a commercial feed just to see how that works?
That's what I'm stuck with right now and so unhappy with. Good feed is about the same cost as the commercial stuff or even less, it's just out of my reach for now. Two hours one way to KY, 1 1/2 hours south of me, who uses my recipes. There's a mill near you that is organic and will make my blends, but they want more than $1,000 per ton. The guy an hour and a half south of me got so frustrated, he setup his own mill. Was able to get a grant for it. But he has to make substitutions, because of available ingredients that I would like to avoid.

There's a deli about 9 hours from you, pretty much up I-65, ohhhh what I wouldn't do to have some of their polish sausage. It's the real deal.

It is New Year's day so I had our traditional family dinner of Pork & Sauerkraut with dumplings and mashed potatoes. Needless to say, my belly hurts from overeating. It was delicious.

Dang it R2elk!!!! Just sitting here trying to decide what to eat!! Now I HAVE to do sausage & kraut!!!! Off to the store!!

My pork and kraut (and hot dogs for kids and hubby) are all in the crock pot. It's all done and I can smell it wafting through the house. The potatoes are in the pot and on the stove. I can't wait to dig in to it!

Yup, was fine with a single fence, but adding 1 1/2 more fences weakened it's bite.

I don't have a clue. I'm all over the place. I still can't find decent feed and haven't been able to make the drive to Kentucky to check out what they have. And I don't have storage space for a full Ton. If funds permit, I'll buy four more 55 gallon drums so I can store more than a ton feed, then just order it from VA. Shipping is $40/bag up to 10 bags, 10 - 40 bags is a flat $200 and will be less if I pick up at the depot. Considering the cost of gas, a trailer rental and the fact I don't have any experience with the feed in KY, it makes more sense to just get it from VA.

Once I solve the feed issue, and I have to as I have an order for meat ducks in early spring, I then have to decide what varieties I want to continue raising and how many to re-seed my stock. I definitely want Nari and bourbon. I have 3 RP hens, but no Tom and my blacks gave pretty petite poults this year. In fact my turkey hatch was pretty terrible this year, which I blame largely on inadequate feed. I like the eye candy the RPs provide, but they seem the least hearty variety for here. So back to no clue at the moment.
I feel you on the feed thing, I have been trying for 2 years to find a way to improve what I can offer mine( without completely breaking the bank) I am currently feeding a special mix that my local feed store happily mixes up for me in bulk and puts in this nifty trailer I can rent to haul it home and store it in

I can just fit a 5 gallon bucket under the chute at the back and voila a rodent proof way to keep up to 2500 pounds of bulk feed!
Ok so it would be cheaper to feed the mixes that they make up but I am still convinced that lack of proper nutrients was part of my hatching issues early on..... some of those feeds are great for esting egg numbers not always as good for hatching eggs.
I did have really good fertility with these last few batches of eggs I put in the bator, so I think it is working

Oh one thing I have found is that the purina flock raiser seems to help get my babies off to a good start, I mix it half and half with the chick starter/and or turkey grower my feed store mixes..... I seem to get better results than with just starter

Well the new GM at the coop is my problem. They bought 6 ton of Non-GMO whole roasted soy for my feed blends, then someone failed to place the order for the GMO soy and the guys ran out. So they just used up mine and then the GM wanted me to make up his loss because they sold the feed to the other guys at regular price. Now he doesn't do Non-GMO. Got another feed store that says he's interested but just can't get any forward motion out of him.
