A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I wanted to ask what color edging on the mature breast feathers on Bronze/red bronze poults tells if they are males or females (about half my poults are bronze and Red bronze, and i can't for the life of me remember if it was light edging for hens, or toms, or the other way around), and i am beginning to think my Rusty Black poult might be a mottled black, and it appears my Silver auburn poult is still alive (I thought it didn't survive, but once its colors didn't match the Red Bronze or the Harvest gold the only other option was its a Silver Auburn), my poults are officially 3 months old, and they are getting adult feathers in, but i still see juvenile feathers on them, my 2nd Silver Dapple feathered out pure white (i'm hoping I don't have too many toms in my brood)

You may have to wait closer to 6 months on the Bronze and Red Bronze for the tell to work. All Bronzes with juvenile feathers will have the light lower edging. The tell will only work on their adult breast feathers. Light lower edge = hen, dark or black lower edge = tom.

Thanks R2elk, I needed that information, i am just trying to figure out the number of Toms i have, so i can make sure i am keeping a group of 4 - 5 hens per tom, currently my silver dapple poult is developing the knobs at the base of his neck, so i'm pretty sure its a Tom (of which he is already named "Guardian"), the rusty black (thats what it was labeled) appears t o be a hen, and my mom ended up naming her "Rusty" due to the rust colored fluff on her head when she arrived as a day old poult, the 3rd that has a name is "Happy Tom," he is a Harvest Gold, i'm pretty sure its a Tom due to his size (the name was inspired since he is always happy to see us).

Happy Tom was the first poult to start jumping onto my lap, and he got everyone else into jumping on my lap (and they started getting the guineas to start jumping onto my shoulders)

Happy Thanksgiving, Peoples!

It's been a rather slow week around here since I haven't been feeling "up to par". Had rain and snow flurries and now a lot of wind. Yesterday the average was 37mph with gusts over 65. Today the average is about 23, temp is 37 with a windchill of 23. And this is according to my weather station outside. It's pretty breezy out there and a lot of folks west of me are having power outages. So far, my lights have flickered a few times, but I won't be surprised if the power goes out.

Now I am being told we have a "mountain fire" about 15 minutes away from me. This is NOT something that happens around here on a normal basis, but I do hope they have it under control! It has to be hard to fight flames in this wind. I'm watching for the local wildlife to start doing a "walkabout" in my direction. I can only imagine how bad it gets with some of the western state fires.
