A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Lol!! My turkey birth control method in my goat lot next year will be my Pyrenees. He finds all eggs within his territory and removes them for population control. He also doubles as quality assurance coordinator and inspects the eggs for freshness and taste. In short, he is an egg eater. The turkey hens will have to get pretty crafty to keep him from finding their eggs.

I plan on keeping birds I want to breed in separate pens during breeding season. We will also have to put nests up high where Waylon can't reach them, because he finds all eggs where he can get to them.

I'm glad your hen brings the poults back to the yard during the day. You could follow her late in the evening in stealth mode and see where she is taking them. By now I imagine she is taking them up in a tree.
Turkey hens are VERY crafty. We have tons of coyotes, raccoons, skunks, etc and she evoided them all. Your pyrenees must have the nose of a bloodhound. Now my hen has been taking the poults to a different location every evening. My nightmare is that her poults will grow up feral and colonize the neighborhood. I don't care about the bronze one or the black ones, I can pretend like I don't know them. But if a bunch of blue slate turkeys start messing up people's yards, everyone will know where they came from :(

It is my fault for not penning my birds properly. My hen doesn't like to be locked up, and I feel like a big meany if I don't let her do whatever she wants all the time. I am so bad at this lol

As long as they know where you put the feed and water, they will keep coming home. If you want to capture them, make sure the food and water is in an enclosed area.

Sounds so simple when you explain it like that. There is food and water in the chicken coop. That is where my turkey hen lived before she left to hide her nest. Do you think she will bring her poults back in there? Or should I build a covered pen that is big enough for her + 9 poults? There are not many turkey buyers here, so I might be stuck with them for awhile :(

Also I am wondering if this method would work to capture feral peafowl? Asking for a neighbor, lol.

My boy Zeus does the same thing, and Apollo when he is out with Zeus.

Thanks for the heads up! I have been learning a great deal from turkey color genetics 101 on Facebook. However, I may end up buying the book though.

I do think I've about got homozygous versus heterozygous penciling figured out finally.

Now to really mess with you. Penciling is tied to the black winged bronze gene.

Recessive Slates have what looks like penciling in their tail feathers but do not have the black winged bronze gene or the penciling gene.

That explains the prevalence of penciling in my sweetgrass, FF, and palm group. They are BWB based.

What base do Recessive slates have? They have barring so not BWB. Are they bronze based?
