A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I'll let her try it and see how she does. She a first timer but she's caring for the eggs good and she'll never learn if she doesn't have the chance, right ;)

Glad to hear that I'm priveledged! She seems very laid back about aLL this and doesn't mind the other fields sharing her nest to lay or me poking around. I hope she a little tougher on the others once the babies arrive but still easy going with me lol

Holm - I can't believe that you put a bird in with the snakes :). As a kid, I might have tried that too....I wanted all the critters to be friends.

Aurora - It will be so neat to see what Pebbles does with babies - although I agree with Memphis, she might be surprised at how quick they arrive!

Had my evening lap cuddles with Big Bird. I do think she might be needier because it's breeding season (the chickens probably aren't giving her many snuggles) - so maybe I have a seasonal lap turkey. Still no eggs from her, but I imagine they'll show up when she's darn good and ready :D

Tomorrow I will tell you all the stoey of the snappong turtle we fed KFC! I was OBSESSED with animals and wanted every single one. I have had baby rabbits, birds, mice, snakes, salamander, frogs, squirrel, cats and all kinds of bugs. I was an animal nut... I still am. I feed the birds and squirrels. I LOVE DOVES. I love watching them. I feed whole corn on a shoveled path that all grass in the backyard and all sorts of birds eat there. Anyways... Yeah...

Too funny - want to hear about the KFC  I think I feed everything that comes our way - we are not a farm, just an acreage - and we spend more on bird and animal food than people food. But I've always loved having the critters around - so it's totally worth it.

I was playing with the Turkey Color Calculator because a woman who is interested in my Self Blue hen has 4 toms and is trying to figure out which one she is going to keep. She has two Sweetgrass, one Bourbon Red and one heritage Bronze.

I already knew that crossing her with a Bourbon Red will produce all Rusty Slates and we all know by now that Rusty Slates can produce 27 different varieties.

Crossing a Self Blue with a Sweetgrass will produce all Tri-color Mottled Slates. Breeding Tri-color Mottled Slates together can also produce 27 different varieties. Some of them such as the Cornish Palms which can also come in Lavender and Blue, and Blue Sweetgrass can be stunning.

Wonder which tom she will keep?

The mottled turkeys are so pretty! I hope she keeps a sweetgrass :).

I have coveted lavender, slate, calico and sweetgrass. My list of colors that I want keeps getting longer..... I need a bigger turkey barn lol. I would love to have a variety of colors in my flock!

She just confirmed that she wants the hen and that she believes that she will keep a Sweetgrass tom.

I've always been the same way. My family always called me the animal whisperer or Dr Dolittle growing up. Except, I want allowed to have all kinds of animals. We had a day and it took years to convince my parents to let us get a dog. I had a pet rabbit at a friend's house that I got in trouble for when my parents found out and I used to get in BIG trouble for bringing home status all the time lol. Now that I have my own place, I have 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 rabbit in the house with all my chickens and turkeys. Still trying to talk hubby into either a pair of dairy goats or sheep and a horse but he keeps telling my that we only have a little over an acre and can't afford more land right now. So I'm stuck at where I'm at. I still rescue anything wells that I find that's injured. We had a bullfrog last year that was missing a hind leg and raised up a baby robin :)

R2elk....she made the right decision! The Triple Colored Mottled are stunning. And I didn't realize the variety they can produce. Did not realize the variety breeding two mottled can produce. Good info!

I'm loving all these animal stories!

Fiesty...Big Bird is really bonding with you. I got home well after dark. My girls were already asleep. I missed my evening chat with them. I admit it, I'm bummed when I don't get enough turkey time!

Can't wait to see how Pebbles does as a moma! I think it's cool how she let's you fiddle around with her eggs. Obviously there is an element of trust there.

I'm fainted with the relationship some of us have with our hens. Turkey hens are the best!
