A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Had a little incident with the turkey girls this morning. I have an electrical pole in the far back corner of my yard. XFinity showed up early and used a ladder to get up the pole to repair something. Both turkey hens saw this, hopped on top of my 6' fence and proceeded to bark their beaks off at the poor guy. I was totally unaware, was in the house getting ready for work when his co-worker started pounding on my door. The guy was scared of them and wouldn't come down the ladder. It was kind of funny. But they were raising a racket! You know how they can be when something weird in their world is happening!!

That is so funny!

Turkeys are so weird. Last night before Ethel Jr went rogue on the bedtime chase she got separated from the rest by the tree the wind took down. She was separated for maybe 5 seconds, before she started that "HELP< I AM LOST" chirp/click. I laughed at her for being so dumb, which started the chase..

I have people that stop for whatever reason and they get scared when JJ comes over to see what is going on. JJ does not allow anyone into the yard without checking them out. When I pick him up they always are shocked.

I hear things like " you can touch him" and "You can hold him?" It amazes me how weird people can be.

That's hilarious! My flock did that to a lady walking by last year. They followed her the entire length of the yard and we're going to keep following her and barking down the road. Thankfully, she wasn't scared, but amused and waited until we could get them distracted before she walked on. Then again, that was before we had Adam and the two toms we had were on the small side.

This morning, a couple of the mottled blacks got out (what else is new) and we're walking around. Hubby was walking through the words behind the pen and they spotted him and started barking and following him through the woods. He thought it would be funny to see if they would chase him so he started running and they were chasing him down until he got out of the woods. He said they both took off flying, one on each side of him and flew across the yard, back to their pen. He said it was really cool to see. He never goes out top hang out with them but was enjoying them this morning lol. I have to agree though, it's really rather neat to see them get their big butts up in the air and fly :)

Great stories! Turkeys are too funny. I swear if my girls are loose by my back door I'd never be robbed. Not that I have, just saying. I'm betting they would be a better deterrent than a dog. People really dont know what to think when confronted with a turkey.

Well I did what you all suggested and it worked perfectly. All but our black sex link hen came running for the pen when I shook the treat canister. Fed and watered and put them to bed with no issues. Gonna keep up the routine and hopefully they will start beating me to the pen at dusk. Question- when I went to pick up the sex link hen she squated weird, had wings kinda held out from her body and only went half down to ground. Could she be getting close to laying? Around 4 months now maybe slightly over. None of our birds have started laying yet and I'm so anxious.

Glad it worked out for you :) your hen is squatting for you to be mounted, she obviously considers you the leader of the flock and she should start laying within the next two weeks :)

Well after I found the egg I was looking out the window to see where the birds were. Didn't see one of the buffs and Flash, our blue LF Cochin. So I went out to check. Out of curiosity I looked in the hen house. I was totally shocked to see not one but FOUR more eggs in a group in the corner of the house. I had just put fresh straw in last night when I put them to bed. So if they only lay once every 25 or so hours that would mean I have 5 hens laying all at once. From zero to all 5? Seems crazy to me. Can one hen lay more than one egg? Like two maybe? That would make more sense than them all starting to lay on the same day. Or could it be a turkey also? I'm very confused by the number of eggs over night till about noon today. When yesterday there were none. I always walk the yard/area they roam during the day and have never found even a sign of an egg. I'm extremely happy but just confused.
