A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Question- some people are saying to use safeguard dewormer and other deworming meds multiple times a year. But others say you can't kill the worms that cause blackhead with those kind of meds. Read Flagyl is best. Have give to my dogs before. I worked as vet tech for years but we never treated birds there. So these illnesses are new for me. If it is blackhead could she be acting alright today but still be sick?
Dosed correctly, fenbendazole (Safeguard) and albendazole (Valbazen) will kill cecal worms.

Hey gang got an issue with one of our hens. Let me all out to enjoy the warmer temp today and they seemed happy. While I was out walking around with them the darker turkey hen layed down flat on her belly in the open yard. She NEVER lets us get close enough to touch her but I was about two feet from her and took a couple pics to show you all how she is acting. She kept closing her eyes and holding her beak open some. Think she made like a cough sound a couple times. My daughter tried to touch her and she let her pet her repeatedly. I got a towel and went to catch her in it but she got up and did a kind of weak run away from us. Then stopped and hung her head and lowered her body some. Not to ground. We got her back in the pen and I was thinking maybe put some antibiotics in water. Have vetrx drops too. Any ideas? She seemed totally fine 10 mins before she layed down. She will run from us but only for a short distance before stopping and acting tired. She is calling to the other turkey who is still out of pen. Should I separate her from chickens and other turkey? Just don't know enough about their illnesses so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks all.
Mine do this when they want me to "breed" them, lol. If she keeps doing this only when you approach her, that's what it is.

I know you love poop! Poop meister!!

I suggested she may be starting to squat. Mine are thinking of it! Getting to be that time of year.

Love the turkey porn! Also love some of the pea pics....especially the one with the camera bag. They kill me!!

Wow, all this just cause I thought it MIGHT be blackhead... But better to be safe than sorry.

Poop pictures are so gross.. I notice mine have different poops at different times, I use to get concerned when I saw a yellowish runny poop. Now It does not bother me unless I see a Lot of them.

I did not know worming would stop blackhead. Makes sense, I thought it was something carried by the worm that once inside the turkey was toast, Good to know..

Also stock up now on meds the rules change on the first ( I was told). I seldom use meds but am thinking of stocking up incase of an outbreak. There is no way in Hades, I am going to go to the vet for a prescription for a sick bird. The economics of that are senseless..

Thanks so much for all the great info gang!! I knew you all would be able to give some advice on this. I searched the pen for poop. Found one small pile of diarrhea-will post pic of it. The rest looks normal. Will post those too. We got all the birds end of April first part of may and they were maybe week or two old at that time. So turkeys are approximately 7 months old now. They have been with the chickens since May. Both turkeys are acting completely normal today. But I wondered if she could still be ill and just feeling ok for now. Will try to get a weight on her but she doesn't like us to touch her let alone catch her so might be an issue with that. Saw her eating and drinking today. Also I considered the squatting possibility but she was holding beak open and seemed to be breathing oddly and when she walked away she seemed weak in her legs and just couldn't stay awake. Closing eyes while standing and pulling head into her body or letting it hang down. And she was letting us pet her last night. have NEVER gotten to touch her like that. So if I call a vet and ask about flagyl or one of the other meds will I be able to get them for my birds if they are banned in poultry use? We live in rural area and thought maybe feed store could have one of the meds? Or is it prescribed only? THANK YOU ALL!!! So nice to have people like you all that are willing to help a stranger like this!!! AWESOME PEOPLE!!!
