A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

That calf is adorable!

By gosh R2elk....it hadn't occured to me....I have a horney hen! Poor girl! She needs to get a grip, she's living in a convent over here.

I dunno if I posted these here before or not but it can't hurt! Those two were Ronan, my tom. And, I know this is a turkey thread, but here's the new bull calf, Ferdinand! That's his mom, Speckles, in the back. :)
You're tom is stunning and that calf is adorable! Ralph, don't write that point off yet. How many times did I have early poults in my cabinet last year BEFORE moving them to lockdown?

Queenie is still stubbornly broody here so I made an attempt to give her a chick to raise today. The chick is already almost a week old so I want sure how well thar would go over. Well, I stuck the chick under her, she took a look and settled down all happy and content. I decided that I needed to put a lid on her nest to give her a little more protection from the toms since it was just the bottom half of a dog carrier. Queenie left the nest because I was messing with it but cane back as soon as I moved away. She very much wanted back in there with her chick but as she headed back in to the nest, the little chick came running out SCREAMING at the top of his lungs! He had no clue what this big thing was that was coming at him but he was getting out of there! Queenie was totally confused and walked away, but watched over her shoulder the whole time. She went off to another nest to sit and I tried Ryu give the baby back to her. She was very confused and wanted the chick but he just ran away crying again lol.

In an attempt to break her, I decided to move her to the chicken coop to seperate her from her nests. THAT was NUTS! She would've been fine but even though she free ranges with the ducks, they took serious offense to her being in "their" space and immediately attacked her. They didn't hurt her but it was totally unexpected. Needless to say, she's right back in the turkey coop, trying to nest still :/

My method is to have the chicks, poults, etc. in a separate area. I put the prospective mother in the pen with the little ones. I watch to see her behavior. If she wants the little ones she will round them up and take control of them. It may take several days for the hen to convince them that she is the momma. I do observe the initial meetings because not all hens are good foster mothers and may attack any little ones that they think are not theirs. I never put any little ones under a hen. I let the hen collect them.
