A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

The beards get ripped off and eaten so much, I do not use it to indicate age, other than when I see one as long as that one is, I know he is over 2 by a bit. My 2 year olds have short 2-3 inch beards....But that could be because my hens love nibbling on a beard...

A 2 year old tom can have a very good beard if the hens allow him to grow it out. My first Bourbon Red tom had his best beard as a 2 year old. He had a double beard with the longest being approximately 8" and the second beard was approximately 6".

My Slates have rarely been able to maintain a beard of more than 2" no matter how old they get. Those hens appear to like their males well trimmed. The males stand and take the trimming as if they like the process.

feels good to be reading about everyone's turkeys again... mine are growing well I finally have stopped losing poults and am down to 7 from 10.... I got one replaced... white poult. I had to put a hardware cloth lid on the brooder because the white poult went on an adventure in my garage found it about 60 feet away on the other side of the garage... how it survived the cold garage floor is beyond me it was a fun game of hide and seek though

Finnie Mr. T is 3 years old this spring and every single egg from his girls is fertile. Except Mabel... There is something wrong with her I think... And I suppose he only has 2 hens so that's an easy amount for him to cover... Hopefully next year he has triple that amount... I need more turkeys :lau. After those first two hatched I decided I need more!

Adam had a good 5-6 inch beard when we butchered him. He was only 2 years old. I may just depends on the tom. Last fall, I brought home a free CCL roo after I lost mine and he was in much the same condition as your tom. They said that he was typing and only just started to crow but his feathers were a mess (the said he was molting), his scales on his legs were bad, and he had good sized spurs. Quarentine, ivermectin, essential oil/soapy water scrub with an old toothbrush on his legs (and a coat of vaseline) everyday and you'd never know he's the same boy. I still don't know his age but I'm impressed with how he improved and how now hours babies look. Hopefully your tom will be a similar story.

Tablet is running really slow :/ This was him when we first brought him home.
