I call them the gang of 8...all three are 8 years old. They stopped by to visit Daisy after swimming. Daisy was thrilled. Annie & the chickens vacated the area. Daisy just waded into the middle of the girls & got lots of hugs.

Yes Dwayne&Liz...more than one kid decided they want turkeys after meeting Daisy. Last night the mom told her to put on her Christmas list. Then winked at me. Poor kid.
Turkeys can bond strongly with humans. You have to put the time in with them. On an average I spend at least an hour each evening with them. Sometimes just sitting & catching up on email or snail mail. Or working around the yard. In which case they just trudge along behind me. Weekends I'm outside quite a bit. They are hanging out with me most of the time. They have come to expect an evening stroll prior to their bedtime. I put the chickens up and the turkeys & I take a walk. They mostly graze the whole time. They will actually go to the gate and wait for me to let them out into the drive way. If I sidetrack into the house they start grumbling.
thats awesome!! unfortunately i dont really have the time o spend with them but i am hoping i will be able to spend a little more time once my daughter is in school
While JJ use to go for walks with us the current batch does not, However, I am outside a lot during the day, both winter and summer, they follow me and inspect everything I do.

Today I was working in my shop (tuning up my sawmill) when I had 9 turkeys standing around looking at me. I cannot really hold any of these yet, JJ jr dropped out of lapper training, but will be going in again soon. Snitch was not there as she is rearing her baby. When she is done rearing her baby, they will both be back in lapper training...

I can pick up a couple of the RP hens and carry them around, but they are not fond of it. They are just too small to fight back effectively...

Speaking of Lappers, My SS hen with the chicks is driving me nuts.... If I leave her in the cage she bites me whenever I walk by. Why???

Because she knows this will get my attention and open the door, then she can be held...

Yesterday, I decided her babies did not need her anymore. So I picked her up carried her around and set her on the ground. She loved this, except for Cuddles trying to have his way with her every 3 minutes....

She looked for a place to lay an egg, I am sure she hid one somewhere.. Later she came back and wanted in the cage again. I put her in.... Which was fine for 10 minutes, when she bit me again....

I picked up, and set her on the ground, I did not hold her...She spent 3 hours following me and whining...Do you know how old a hens whining gets?

She wanted to sleep with her babies, I carried her out and put her in the SS coop. I could here the whining 50 yards away. The WWD was laughing at the whining.

This morning when I let them out, she wanted to see her babies. I had to put her in the cage, 20 minutes later I got bit..

She is now out of the cage has been all day, but whenever I get close to her the whining starts and she follows me. I have picked her up a couple times, but I do not have all day to hold a spoiled hen.
Buwhahahaha!!!!!! She has you well trained :lau

Does it taste the same as the Orange ones
i think a little more earthy but also a little sweeter but not as sweet as say a parsnip

R2elk, you weren't kidding about a dark purple carrot. Is that an old variety?
With the revival of the old colors of carrots they are now developing new varieties. This particular variety is relatively new. Prior to the resurgence of the various colors, the orange variety was actually the newest color variant.

@karenerwin CX (or mine did) laid a light brown egg, It has been a few years since I had a CX egg. My toads I think look like a CX egg. They are large the same size as a turkey egg only rounder. I have one hen that lays a more pointed egg, I need to mark it right away or I would think it is a turkey egg.

As I recall, Mendel is the person that created what we call carrots. The ancestor was a wild white root. I would look it up, but I have a busy morning....

And I have a SS hen to serve in addition to everything else.

She was in the SS coop last night on her own. I was impressed! However, she was on the far end of the roost away from Cuddles. It appears being next to Cuddles is the coveted spot, Also it amazes me they are in the same spots almost every night.

Her and JJ Jr would have had pretty babies. I was going go all SOP turkeys. I have decided not to do that. Showing turkeys is not for me. I want a colorful back yard flock, and people that buy poults don't care what they are.
To be honest, I was a little sad when you decided to only do SOP turkeys. It seemed like you had been enjoying your fun color turkeys a lot. Welcome back to the fun side!

I think I just ate my last turkey egg omelet! I checked the eggs for fertility before I beat them, and I'm not sure, but I think I saw a tiny ring around the blastoderm on one. So I am going to start setting all of Muffin's eggs after this. (Swan went broody and stopped laying, but I have 11 of her eggs in the incubator. At least two are growing!)
