A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Thanks R2elk. Little by little I am learning how to "see" the different color mutations. I can understand genetics and how it works, but until I can recognize how genes look on the actual birds, it won't help much.

When I got home I took new photos of the poults. In this case, the father is the Bourbon Red and the mother is the blue Palm. I was assuming they were both pure, but since the poults have differences they shouldn't have, I'd like to try to figure out what the genetic difference is. That way I can choose which to keep for breeding next year.

In the photos, the darkest one (which must lack the blue gene) is one of the ones that has the unexpected wing pattern, so I don't think it's a normal red bronze. (We will try to figure out whether it's the b' gene in action.)
The others all have a blue gene, so they are the blue red bronzes. And one of those has the unexpected pattern too. The other three have striped wings like a bronze or red bronze should have.

I hope the system doesn't balk at 15 photos! I'll do them thumbnail to save space. Aaaaand they all went to the top of the post! Oh well.
My guess is that your Bourbon Red tom is carrying the Black Winged Bronze gene (b1). I suspect that what you are looking at is the Bourbon Red tom (bb1 rr) mixed with the Blue Palm (b1b1 cgcg Dd n-) which produced Blue Red Bronze (bb1 Ccg Dd Nn Rr), Harvest Gold (b1b1 Ccg dd Nn Rr), Red Bronze (bb1 Ccg dd Nn Rr) and Regal Blue Red Bronze (b1b1 Ccg Dd Nn Rr). These color genes are for the males. The females would not have the Narragansett gene at all and would be (N-). I believe that you do have some Harvest Gold turkeys and I believe that your Blue Red Bronzes with the different wing patterns are the Regal Blue Red Bronzes. This would indicate that it is indeed the Black Winged Bronze color gene (b1) causing the difference in the wing color pattern.

Speaking of legbars....why can't both comb styles be acceptable? Maybe comb size is not as important as the crest size. With my breed of dog our standard says that height is between 18-23 inches, but "quality" not to be sacrificed for size, meaning size isn't as important as other things.

Ralph...you & Holm could hop on a plane. Get an under the seat crate & bring a few birds. Buckeye folks are holding their National meet there. I have a van. I can pick you guys up at the airport.
