A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have an issue with one of my turkey hens. She is trying to be broody and every time i destroy the nest she makes a new one and hisses at me. I move her into the yard and destroy it again and put something over it like a cinder block, and her spiteful tail will make a nest on the side of the cinder block. How do i stop her?

You're no fun.... :yuckyuck:bun
I still haven't tried to measure, but it did quit raining so I mowed the lower quarter of the yard. The turkeys chased me from one end to another so I decided to give them a treat. The pic isn't the best cause it's hard for me to hold the container and snap a pic at the same time (same as chewing gum and walking). :D

Anyway, this shows the size difference between the two toms that are standing side by side.

That's a pretty big difference...

Rainy here too Flash.
Poor dear refuses to let loose of that last tail feather. She's hanging on to one last shred of dignity. You can see her new tail is trying to come in

The poor bird even looks like she is depressed! lol. At least the new ones will be in before too long.

Mine haven't started, but are dropping feathers everywhere. But I think that is because of their age and someone said they shed their juvenile feathers often. I haven't seen anyone starting to molt yet but I do have one white Muscovy who may be starting since all her ducklings are now gone.

broody jail, wire cage suspended so there is airflow under her, with food and water inside -may take a few days, also can try sticking frozen water bottles under her

R2elk, thank you for the response. I will try and do that tomorrow and compare that to measurements on the other tom.

As I have said previously, these poults came here on the same day and at the same size. The one in my avatar appears to be several inches taller and wider than the other guy. Hence, my questioning if he could be a half-breed out of a broad-breasted bird. His legs are really thick and makes the other tom's legs look like the hens legs. There is NOT much difference between Iron's legs and the girls and he's only slightly taller/larger.

I do know both of them are male cause I have now seen both strut and gobble in front of me. In fact, I was sitting with them earlier today and played a youtube video of a turkey gobble.

Ahem....might not do that again as both toms got all rednecked (literally) and had an.....ahhhh.... minor confrontation.
:lau
About being half broad breasted, you should easily be able to tell by the keel area. My crosses are super meaty with a bump of keel and thick legs. Their heritage siblings have very predominant keel and thinner legs.
