A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Sheesh! A person not yet grown-up enough to care for animals for sure! I did think the leg thing sounded a little too easy. (Or maybe like someone just pranking his audience.) :idunno

I’m kind of wary about people coming over, too (if I were to ever decide to sell any babies, eggs, etc.) Mainly because they probably already have poultry. I’ve been told that mycoplasma something-or-other is endemic to our area (by the president of the local poultry club) and that this meant I shouldn’t worry about taking home a rooster of his that had been exposed...:barnie I didn’t take the rooster but I did take a shower. After that, I’d say the same as you... “I will bring the babies to town for you.”

I always meet people buying poults in a public place vs at the farm. We do live far out which works as a good excuse for them.

Yeah I always meet at the local Sheetz or McDonald's a town away depending on the day. I've lost a couple sales because I won't let people come here but most understand.

So...anybody else partying the night away?? That darn Daisy really wanted too. She wanted to wear sparkly saddle & tierra. But I know darn well she'd be asleep shortly after dusk. No convincing her! Aurora...need to add formal wear to you turkey saddle designer line!

I'll get right on that! Lol

The first poults I got they did the legs test.... said it was two pairs. .. turned out to be four jakes.
My turkeys rarely fly over the four foot poultry net... they fly up to a six foot wooden Post, they fly to the top rail on the chain link fence... And then down or into a tree.

My time will rarely escape over the 6 foot fence. The only ones that do are the young boys. The hens, only the stubborn and determined ones fly out but they're typically nice enough to go back in at night lol. If they stop going back in at night, they do get 1 wing clipped. Tonight, , Eve decided to break the rules and go back in to the main coop instead of in the chicken coop like she's supposed to.... so uncharacteristic for her. Usually it's Cynthia breaking the rules but she went back to the chicken coop like she was supposed to tonight. (Bourbon reds are separated in the chicken coop for breeding for those that didn't know)

Mine think they are wild. They roost in my coop, (a renovated machine shed with 18 ft side walls) 18 ft up on the rafters....A 4 ft netting is not even a challenge to them. If I want to lock them in it requires bird netting.

I got 2 turkey eggs today.. One might not be any good. It had froze and cracked from end to end. Maybe with enough fingernail polish, I could sell it to one of you to try....

@duluthralphie I see you’re experienced in mareks? I have a chicken that I think has the ocular strain (picture below). My other birds of the flock were known-vaccinated but no clue about this one (was a hatchery mis-ship).

My concern is: are the turkeys at any risk? They’re on opposite sides of the property but wind/wild birds are around us as are humans/fomites. Didn’t know if it wasn’t transmissible as I see mixed studies on it spreading to commercial turkeys and quail but not always.

As I understand it the turkeys are not at risk. The Herpes virus that causes Marak's only affects chickens. In fact, a turkey herpes virus is used in the vaccine for chickens, as the two are closely related but not the same...

Sort of like a goose and duck cannot have babies together..They are closely related species and both make good compost, but not close enough to interbreed...Thank Heavens!!

Happy New years...

Happy New Year y'all! Stayed home last night. Usually do on New Years eve. Plus, didn't trust Daisy not to be celebrating.
So I was sound asleep at midnight when all the fireworks started. Would have slept through them if not for my coonhound deciding it was a good time to light up. Coonie baying with the fireworks does wake me up and can rattle windows. Geez! He hardly ever bayss or barks in the house....I almost fell out of bed....startled me!
So...here's hoping we all have a great 2019!! And cheers to all of our turkeys!!

Mine are due Jan 8th.. maybe me!! Although I severely suck at it.. and only 5 in the bator look promising. So maybe don't hold me to having any live hatches!

I think this will be my last Turkeys for a while.. got 3 different ages walking around at the moment, its getting to be a PITA moving everyone around to keep them safe from each other :barnie

Happy New Year all. 2019 -the year of the house turkeys :lau (wearing diapers!!)
