Could you tell these nice Purdue people, I will bring them a whole truck load of turkeys for that price.....Around here if you offer a turkey for $60, people will stone you. But at the auction just 30 miles up the road, an adult turkey will sell for $80. Who's buying? Purdue employees.
Chocolates are black based. Chocolates are also sex linked. If your black tom is carrying a hidden recessive chocolate gene, it is possible for him to make female chocolate poults. For him to make male chocolate poults, he would need to be mated with a chocolate hen.I find it interesting that this batch of turkeys we have 4 or so that are chocolate colored..... and here I thought with a black tom we would get more black poults..... of course the fact that my dd wanted black probably played a part.
That would make perfect sense as he was out of a mixed flock of standard bronze and chocolate.... one tom of each with several females of each all 5ogether. There are several black hens from the same flock with him so???? I guess getting the blacks may be harder than I thought, and last year that was mostly what we hatched..... lol I obviously have much to learn about color geneticsChocolates are black based. Chocolate hens have only one brown (e-) gene but it takes two brown (ee) genes for the chocolate gene to be expressed in males.
Not knowing which variety the hens are makes it hard to predict what is going on other that it is a very high probability that your Black tom is carrying a hidden recessive brown (e-) gene.
I just peeked in my Bator and I have my first poult of the year! The little guy is 2 days early and is bowling with all the quail and chicken eggs in there lol. He's still wet so I'm not sure what color he is yet. Penciled would be nice lol
I get anxious and remove them every 12 hours or so..... but that's just me..... my brooder is looking Full. Sigh time to build a step up one..... or something to put the next batch in.I love those early birds that take up bowling...
