Nibbles or Leona.....hmmm. I wonder if she'll grow out of this biting thing. She's always trying to get my hair and I think she's the reason that Romeo's beard is suddenly shorter than it used to be.

This is the first time any of my hens have messed with the boy's beards. Romeo is 3 years old and had a nice long beard. I just noticed this morning that it's a few inches shorter and with looking on the ends. Dang hens! He doesn't seem to mind too much though lol

i didn't do a Necropsy, mostly because i do not like doing anything like cutting into animals (either alive, or dead)... my family, and I had a burial for him, since he was considered family, and my family hopes we can find a new Tom that can take his place as best as possible (my entire flock of chickens, ducks, 1 goose, and pair of Narragansett hens were all calling for him for most of the night... it didn't help to know they were mourning for him too)

No, they don't mind it. I have watched hens "groom" a tom's beard and the tom will stand there patiently while they do it.

I checked on the Blue Slate hen this morning. She had two more Sweetgrass poults and one Tri-Color Mottled Black poult hatched. There are at least two more eggs that are pipped. I am now up to 17 Sweetgrass and the one black poult.

Ok...this may seal the deal! My mottled has miniature caruncles!! And his head is consistently redder than the pencilled. The Pencilled has a lovely pinkish cast to her head & neck. The mottled's head & neck are much redder. PLUS...the pencilled barely has any snood or waddle development. The mottled is MUCH more developed.

Keeping within my flower theme for turkey names....I was thinking of Iris for the pencilled. Or maybe Violet. Stumped on the mottled...if truely a male... was thinking of Poppy ( Pops for short) Or Cosmos. Open for suggestions....
