A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Sweetgrass
b1b1 cgcg

Calico
b1b1 cgcg nn Rr or b1b1 cgcg n- Rr

Calicos have the Narragansett gene and a single recessive red gene. Sweetgrass do not have either of those genes. The problem getting a Sweetgrass poult out of a Royal Palm or a Calico is that any male poults made this way will be carrying a hidden recessive Narragansett gene even though they are phenotypically Sweetgrass.
Lol I relayed the info. She asked, what does that mean?
I answered, they look the same. But they won't always breed true if calicos, sweetgrass breed true.

If blue works in turkeys like in chickens, will I get something wonky and fun if there are double slate genes? Like, splash sweetgrass?
In turkeys if the slate gene is homozygous (DD), it is referred to as Self Blue or Lavender. Homozygous Slate bred to homozygous Slate will breed true.

Blue Sweetgrass (b1b1 cgcg Dd) when bred to Blue Sweetgrass can produce 25% Sweetgrass (b1b1 cgcg), 50% Blue Sweetgrass (b1b1 cgcg Dd) and 25% Lavender Sweetgrass (b1b1 cgcg DD).

Sweetgrass breed true, Lavender Sweetgrass breed true and Blue Sweetgrass just like Blue Slates do not breed true.

I don't know if this poult is a dummy or what but he just joined the brooder yesterday ....

This was last night

Then I woke up to crying because of this, this morning lol

And he hopped back in the middle again right after:lau I'm going to have trouble with this one!

I need to get some new pictures of Blueberry, Blackberry, and Strawberry. They're growing! Blueberry has some sort of issue with his one leg where it likes to go straight out behind him when he takes a step. I'm not sure what's up with that but I have his legs tied together. Hopefully that will help him since I can't find any visible issues. I know that I never introduced Blackberry ... I didn't know at the time that we would worm his way in to our hearts so quickly! He managed to escape the brooder on Day 1 and come looking for us, crying. I've never had a baby escape So young! Ever since then, he's been super affectionate, right in our hands or climbing up on our shoulders. I'm actually amazed that he's are first mottled black to hatch but he deffinitely takes after his dad!

That chick getting stuck is funny!

Can't wait to see the "Berries". I think that's cool that the one takes after his dad! Romeo is a special guy! Sounds like BlackBerry is a born lapper! I hope you guys let him cuddle up for an evening watching tv! He obviously wants to hang with humans! My kind of turkey!!

If I was any closer I steal him! That's the kind of tom I wouldn't mind having!

Iris is molting. What the heck?? And I think Marigold is right behind her. I also think all of Blossoms yapping is her wanting attention. I'll reach down & rub her head & she'll stand there with her eyes closed. Turkeys sure have individual personalities. Makes it fun!!
