A chicken appeared in my yard this morning...

AWW! It sounds to me that it was meant to be! They dont need anything fancy to live happy. Espically for just like 2-3 hens...just a small free dog house from craigslist or something. And you dont even HAVE to have more than the 1 bird if you dont want to..just spend time with her and she'll be fine. THe main thing is that shes safe and warm and not hungry now. Good luck!

Get a rabbit cage and a big sign saying "RABBIT HUTCH" someone else here did that or get a little plastic childrens playhouse and convert it into a coop and they will never know as long as she is quiet and doesn't end up being a roo.

Just get her a small doghouse to live in with shavings or cheap hay as bedding; that's what I do! Don't worry about "illegal" , she won't be noticed and if you give your neighbors a few eggs they will be fans of your pet too! Actually my best friend is an animal control officer, she usually looks the other way if chickens are kids' pets. You would be surprised how many cities have an ordinance that states a few chickens can be kept as long as their coop is 100 feet from the nearest neighbors house. Your hen does look very young. She will be an asset to your organic garden. Congratulations!!

Looks like a young Delaware.

Only about a month old. She'll need at least one other friend, though. You know, you COULD make her a house chicken...

A few people on the forum sell chicken diapers. But yes, chickens are very social creatures and they need their own kind around them. People are nice company, but they just don't make the cut for chickens.

THAT IS-if you decide to keep her.

She looks like she is in wonderful health, though. And she found you!

Ummm, is anyone else thinking "cockerel" when they saw the picture? Perhaps it's the way it looks in the photos, but it seems to have a really red comb & emerging wattles there. I could be wrong, and often am. Still, it's a good idea with all new chicks to have a Plan B in place for any unwanted roosters. If you're not allowed to keep chickens in your yard you might be able to hide a hen, but not a rooster.

ACM, and I hope this fairy story has a very happy ending for you.

I don't offer my opinion on that subject any more! There was a thread where the OP asked for opinions. The poster that had the opposite opinion let me have it!
