Can I play? I have a (at least) 6 y/o EE that still occasionally lays an egg or two between intervals, they are a lovely bright blue when she does lay and she is our only EE. Her name is Maude and she last laid an egg this past spring. May I enter Maude or is she too old to play? She still sneaks out the back yard when the other hens aren't looking, and comes back after exploring her favorite area in the front yard. But she wont let the other hens know how she does it. In other words she is not an old senile hen.
This is Lizzie, a Plymouth Barred Rock. Lizzie has lived here for 6 weeks and never laid an egg. I'm unsure of her age as she was dumped but she does not look like a pullet. At a minimum she's 18 months old. She has red comb and wattles. Dark orange legs, feet and beak. Tight, dry, clean vent. Her sisters have white legs and bigger, moist vents with somewhat messy butt feathers. Of my 6 big hens, 5 laid eggs today but not Lizzie. She might be molting or stressed from her past ordeal. Or she might be a dud. But she's the sweetest barred rock I have so dud or taking a break, we're happy to have her.

She was a fairly regular layer when we first got her (years ago) I might be able to get my DH to get her to lay. LOL About 2 or 3 times a year DH tells she will become soup if she doesn't lay eggs anymore and within a week or two she will lay 1-3 or 4 eggs and stop again. Honest this is a true story, been going on for almost 2 years now.Was Maude ever a regular layer? Or has she been a sort of dud from the get go? She doesn't have a secret hiding spot in the front yard? I don't know what's worse, a bird that never lays or one that up and quitsI hope one of these days we can see a pic of a lovely blue egg from here!

Now that I have told the secret, am I banned from playing?

It's really just a running joke. She was one of our first hens and an adult when we got her, so she is very old and I am always suprised when she does lay an egg. She is really just a favorite pet at this time.No Talking about SOUP until the contest is over!!!
I didn't think it was possible, but I may actually be getting fewer eggs from my one and only layer than when I started this thread hoping the rest of the girls would lay soon![]()
