Ok, it REEKS. One bucket smells like puke. It is so strong and sour I want to puke. and the other has mold on it.![]()
Does your feed contain any fish meal? I have heard from others that they get off odors fermenting feed with fish meal in it. I haven't had that issue, but I imagine I'm using a different feed and a I also use a special starter and don't do the continuous bucket method like so many other folks do.
Chickens will also eat some pretty awful things...well, awful to us but awesome to them! You might try feeding them, as a treat, a small bit of the puke smelling one and see how they react. If they love it, I'd say go for it. The moldy one, I would scoop the top couple of inches off and see if the feed below looks and smells okay. We make fermented sauerkraut and pickles all year long and sometimes end up with a bit (or a lot) of mold on top. If we scoop the mold off, the veggies below it are usually very delicious and okay to eat. We also always have a roll of pH test paper around to make sure the pH is still in the proper range (usually 3.0-3.8), not necessary, but helps with peace of mind and saving some ferments that we might have otherwise tossed. If the pH is low enough (below 4.5 and best if 3.8 or lower), it is impossible for "bad bacteria" to thrive, such as salmonella and e. coli. However, some beneficial bacteria, such as bacilus subtilus, can and do stink, think limburger cheese or natto. Both perfectly healthy foods (as in they won't make you ill), tasty to some and disgusting to others.
