We are relatively new to mandarins, this is our first breeding season. I was curious when they molt. I thought it would have been in the fall like the other ducks, but ours look very ratty, like they are molting now. I think this may be correct since they would need to migrate in the fall so that would not be a good time to loose ones feathers. Also we have a female setting on a nest of six eggs and as of now only one is good and it should be hatching soon. I know fertility is good because we sold her first clutch and 3 out of those 5 hatched. So if we take the duckling off of her when it hatches would she lay another clutch? If we leave it with her would she lay another clutch later this year or do they only lay one per year?
This is not a mandarin question but I was wondering what color eggs do chiloe widgeons lay? Someone is laying a light green egg, about the size of a medium chicken egg. Right now we have two pair of mandarins, a pair of pintail, a pair of wood ducks, a pair of chiloe widgeons and a pair of ring teal. I know what the mandarin eggs look like and same with the pintail, which is broody. I also assume that the woody eggs look like mandarin eggs, a light brown. So I am assuming the eggs are from the widgeons, since the pintail is setting, the mandarins and I think the woodies are a light brow and they are too big for the teal.

My mandarins are starting to look a little ratty as well. I actually think they molt in summer, because I know by mid-late fall they have their color back again. If you take the eggs as they lay them, then yes... it will induce them to lay another clutch. At this point though, since she is already setting on them I dont know if she would lay another clutch. They will usually only lay one clutch unless the eggs are taken.

As for the light green egg.... I dont know. Its almost got to be the widgeons or the teal. I've never seen the egg of either though.

My mandies are looking okay, but thats just because they are always swimming and preening. I thought they molted in the summer after breeding season and got the colors back in the fall. We have two nests in the aviary right now and I think one of them is the mandarins. I think I will just let her sit on it. Also, usually first year mandarins don't double clutch, so you were lucky to get another clutch out of her after you sold her first one. Therefore, I dont think you should take this one away because she probably won't lay after that.

I think they are molting and so is my wood duck. There are tons of feathers in the pond, also you can see now growth on my wood duck's wing. I am hoping to catch who is laying, soon there are already 4 eggs.

My mandies are molting... I only have one drake that still has his sail feathers... I found a couple of sail feathers in their pen and they sure are neat looking. I guess I never thought about what they would look like so I was surprised when I found them.

They molt in late summer. I bought my regular pair last year in early september and both look like hens. My regular drake is missing his sail feathers on one side. And my white drake has never looked 100% feathered (I personally think he is a very submissive drake and seems to think everybody will bully him) My regulars have 10 eggs and my whites haven't layed yet >.< THEY BETTER LAY SOON!

Mine haven't laid a single egg

Ditto. I keep checking, but none yet from 2 females. My Australian Spotted female (in the same pen) has laid 3 eggs now, so I hope the Mandies get moving!
