OK. I did it! I went on Vaca without my chickens! I am on vacation in Powell River
and I left my babies with my husband and my close friend! No one is replying to my texts on how they are doing.... Should I call? Should I go back home? Should I call 911!!!?
My Gawd, I have been gone since 7:30am and it's now 6pm! These people know how I am about my Hens!
So 4 days ago I found a "different" egg in one of the never used nesting boxes. The 2nd day I saw Franklin my Frizzle roo in that nest. I thought, I knew something would come up to stop my vaca plans, Franklin is sick. I watched. Franklin laid an egg..... I
almost fell over, 1 less roo!!!
Now I don't know if hens put out pheromones or what but now Gorgeous George wants Frankie to join his flock of six. He circles her and tries to seduce her over to his girls and Elvis. Still waiting to hear Elvis croon to the ladies himself.
Anyway, Frankie thinks she belongs with Brucie who I fear will never find a home or a stew pot in someone else's home. She ran around and around the rhubarb bush until she got far enough ahead of George and his tiny little OEG bantam legs and then hid under a big leaf. Unfortunately, her look-a-like sister hen, Lilly was standing right there and ever since poor George had that duck attack him I don't think he is fully loaded in the brains. George took up the chase on Lilly who ran right to me for a cuddle. George gave the evil eye to me while Frankie took the opportunity to run to Bruce and hide under his 7lb full barred rock body.
Little head poking out between his butt feathers! However Bruce is minus a few brain cells himself and stepped on her, she squawked and George saw her. The chase was back on.
Now Miss Sophia Lohen, as she now wishes to be called, worships Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock. All day long she goes about calling for him..." ROOOOCK" "ROOOOCK." The silly chick has never learned to talk chicken.
Then there is Harmony and Josie. They still keep the daily eggs warm until I come home from work. Harmony has been broody for 6? 8 weeks? Josie 2 weeks less? I have tried to break them in various ways but I just don't think it is going to happen this time. I AM NOT doing chicks again until March!!!! Harmony is getting sneaky and hiding the eggs in her wings now...
. The good news is, I wanted 6 hens and 6 eggs a day type of thing. Now I have 17 fowl and am finally getting 5/6 eggs a day! Altho those frizzle eggs are tiny little things and Sophia's eggs are not much bigger! I do make the 2 hens get off the nests a much as I can and I know they are getting themselves off too. Their weight and feathers are still good.
So basically I have 3 flocks under one roof.
The ladies of the larger breeds that no one messes with, George with his harem and Bruce with his 3. All is going swell so far!
Still no word from my help..... I hope 4 food dishes and 8 water bowls will hold out for the night. Next ferry outta here isn't until early morn! This is not boding well for my camping trip Sept 5th. I wonder how my sister will feel about 17 chickens in her RV?
PS The pigeons here are not quite up to the scale of chickens.
