A debate forum?

Correct me if I'm wrong,,,,,it seems every time someone suggests something to better the forum it's immediately or almost immediately responded to with a post regarding how hard the mods work and what a great job they do and that it's all for the members. It's almost as if it's an automated response. Very curious.

Also, I agree with purplechicken in that the mods AND the members have made a great place here. I'm sorry to hear that the mods are so busy dealing with complaints- I guess it's none of my business WHY they're getting so many complaints.

Maybe, to avoid it getting out of hand, there can be a probationary period on the debate forum- if it ever exists.
I also have to say that I am not one to start a thread for argumentive purposes or to start a fight or anything like that. But I felt like that's what I was doing when I started my chicken eating chicken thread. I would have been much more comfortable posting this topic in a, again, conroversial board.

I kind of think it would be nice if there was an option. Then, for example, if a regular thread becomes controversial, someone can say, let's move this to the debate section, start up there where they left off and so the original question isn't hidden in a debate. It could have titles like, Debate on topic: "so and so", and it could be in the debate section.

We get complaints about members' posts from other members and we try to act on those complaints in a fair a manner as possible.

The final decision of course rests with the owner as to what content is allowed here. He has that privilege on his privately owned board.

You brought up good points. I will add that family friendly means that it is appropriate for all ages. ChickChair has long experience at maintaining that balance and she does a darn good job of it.

My responses are course only my opinion. In no way should my opinion be necessarily taken as the opinion of the entire staff whose opinions may vary.

Thanks Nifty- It just seems that's all I've seen recently.
Terrie- i was by no means questioning whether it was true or not.
What is the difference between a PRIVATELY OWNED board and other boards?

This thread is a perfect example of the culture of BYC. Everyone
is showing respect and answereing the questions and/or commenting
the best they can for this type of venue. Let's face it, getting a point
accross on a forum is a tough thing.

On the point of ownership most forums are part of large portals such
as Yahoo or are sites that, while may have a domain owner, are run
by a club or comitee. Socialism works for about a day, then becomes
paralized by it's own culture by comitee. Nifty owns this site and has
the final say. I'm very happy about that.

I'm also very happy about members such as Silkiechicken, Barb S, MayberrySaint,
Alleyoops, Barg, and so many others (sorry if I didn't mention you but you
know who you are) that say things like they see it, whether or not it
moay be popular. I've cringed at some of my own posts expecting a backlash
or just mad at myself for being so politically correct.

Enough ranting, I have a question..

Is this thread a:
A)Discussion among friends
B)Debate
C)Arguement
D)None of the above

I think a debate forum would be a bad idea...I get PO'ed enough as it is on some regular threads...

A debate forum would deteriorate into a free-for-all and people would get hurt feelings and hold grudges that will migrate to the other boards.

While I dislike censorship, it does play an important role here at BYC in keeping the forum family-friendly.

So..... I'm still a little confused. Does this mean that there is money involved? I don't quite understand how that would work. What would create income on a site like this to a "site owner"?

Someone please explain.
