A DECADE OF DUCK TALK 2017- 2027

Hello

I've been a long time lurker on this site, and I've finally decided to join! This site has taught me a lot about ducks that I didn't already know, and chickens too (Even tho I'm not a chicken owner lol). But that brings me closer to my question, because I'm not a duck owner anymore either. My two ducks had a good full life up until the day they died, which was around June of 2016. I loved them so much - the way they waddled and made all kinds of quacky peep noises and followed each other around and knocked on the glass door begging for treats. I still miss them, even now.

But I do want new ducks. I am an animal lover, and I love love ducks. Right now I only have a hamster (I take good care of him tho he's rlly cute). So now I want more ducks, and my family does too - even though they will mostly be my ducks lol even tho my dad and twin brother do help me to do stuff and will love the ducks too. I want our ducks for pets, not meat

. I want to train them and create a bond (No imprinting or house ducks tho; I have school and cant make that commitment) with them, and basically just bathe in the awesomeness of having ducks again. So I've narrowed it down to two breeds: The Welsh Harlequin and Buff Orpington (I had Cayugas before). So basically, which of those is the tamest and most personable? I wanted to post this question on this thread to, u know, keep it going for a decade...

Thx for the help and sorry for the long long post.

My brother likes Buff too, maybe I'll end up with three Buff girls... P.S. Must be a lot of hamsters!

Welcome to BYC @QuackSpeak

I would get Welsh Harlequins- by far my favourite breed. I have 8 of them (including 3 ducklings) all of which I hatched and raised my self. They are incredibly tame and follow me everywhere, pestering me to pick them up and cuddle them. My favourite is called Humphery, who when I call his name and hide, he will run around the garden and try and find me lol.

The females are really beautiful too, and aren't as loud as my other breeds, and I've found they are better layers than my Khaki Campbells.

So far:

Buffs: More friendly
Welsh Harlequin: Tame and beautiful

Hmm..

lol maybe I should get mixed...Although, from what I can tell without having them myself, is that these two breeds of ducks seem to have a similar temperament.. Maybe it depends on how you raise them? I'm planning to get ducks in early April bc that's when my school has Spring Break, so I can devote my full attention to those duckylings...Only problem is, I Cant Wait Until April! I am the most impatient person you will ever meet! And Chickygirl7 lol about Humphey he sounds like a sweetheart

Go with which ever breed YOU fancy..... You could even get a couple of one breed and one of the other.

Yes, the way that you raise does have a huge impact on how tame/friendly the duck is- adult ducks that I have bought from farmers or breeders who didnt handle the ducks as babies have been terrified of humans and will try to escape when I walk past their run.

Okay! Thx so much for both of ur help..I'll tell u which breed I pick (Possibly both lol) when I figure it out!

But I will be sure to raise them to the best of my abilities, like Aye and Orrun (My former ducks; their names are in a different language

) were. It's amazing how much u can miss two little ducks who passed over six months ago... But anyways, thank u for the help; I'll be lurking around this thread to see if it survives
