A dozen 3 week chicks❤️

5 week update!! Still feeling confident my Barnevelder is a cockerel. Starting to feel suspect about my easter egger, Breve and one of my Partridge Rocks, Stark. We have some April snow today so class photos were taken in the garage.

12. Dr. Jill. Super Blue EE or Snowy White EE. I'm supposed to have two of each, but not 100% on which is which.

I'm not convinced that the barnevelder is a cockerel. 5 weeks is when I've had my pullets gets super red. It calms down afterwards but the comb is still fairly small so I wouldnt make any assumptions yet.

Honestly Breve and Trout are the only two that look like cockerels to me! I am inclined to say Stark is a pullet because my Silver Pencilled Rock (same pattern different color!) pullet got her comb quite early and whenever I have raised partridge or pencilled breeds, the males get black chest feathers right off the bat. I have seen some pics online of people with male birds whose chest feathers have a more pencilled look at first, but in my experience, I have never had this happen. Definitely update pics of Stark in a week or so! As long as the comb doesn't start to turn red, I'm not worried! Sorry for all the odd reference pics, I've never raised Partridge Rocks, but have raised a few other varieties/breeds that would have similar giveaways of sex!

I would love a Barnevelder hen, though I'm also growing attached to the idea of a Barnevelder rooster. I'm thinking not just because of the comb but also the way the coloring is coming in.

Thanks for weighing in. I've been really enjoying tracking their weekly growth so I'll definitely keep updates coming. Two roosters I feel like we can manage. Three would be tough.

6 week update!! Not much new to report. Still suspecting Trout the Barnevelder and Breve the Super Blue Easter Egger are cockerels. Hoping the rest are pullets. Doppio, one of our Partridge rocks has been slow to feather in.

For fun, if anyone wanted to see, I have a 10 week update from last week. It was the first 80° F day of the year so the chickens were getting down and dirty and got some hose misting action. ( I didn't take their photos this weekend because it's been dumping snow with highs in the 20s/low 30s here in Montana 😭)

Breve and Trout are turning out to be such handsome roosters and my partridge rocks are both BEAUTIFUL pullets.

Trout is such a handsome Barnevelder, he's been so incredibly slow to grow in his feathers above his tail though. Hope he turns out to be a good rooster, currently he's very timid. Definitely lower in the pecking order than most of the hens.

PXL_20210517_205325146.MP~2.jpg
Doppio remains our smallest and turned out to be a she despite her early comb.

PXL_20210517_205246588.MP~2.jpg
Stark, our other partridge rock hiding under the nesting boxes.

PXL_20210517_204030816.MP.jpg
Beignet and Malasada. Malasada is starting to get brown streaking through her tail feathers. You can really see it in the photo below next to Stark.

Wanda.

PXL_20210517_203725844.MP.jpg
Cricket. Though honestly I can't really tell the Australorps a part any more.

PXL_20210517_203856006.MP.jpg
Hedwig, our Delaware.

PXL_20210517_203830331.MP.jpg
Tofu. One of our snowy white EEs.

PXL_20210517_202907160.MP.jpg
Dr. Jill. Our other snowy white EE who has splashes of black, the cutest little muffs, and big personality.

PXL_20210517_203640056.MP.jpg
Storm, our Super Blue pullet. Was a huge brat, bullying primarily our Barnevelder and Partridge Rock. She spent ten days in solitary confinement and is reformed.

Two photos of Breve, our Super Blue Rooster. Already great at his roosterly duties of keeping order and watching for hawks.

10 more baby chicks incoming this week to round out our spring!!
