A few of m new chickens stink and I think have colds?

Thanks so much and you are right. I just wish I wasn't so attached to these chickens! I mean... who falls for a chicken!!?? I am gonna try that right now. But all the same will I ever be able to allow new birds in the flock if my others are not sick? If not I need to find a home for the chicks that have not hatched yet.

Um...guilty! You'd be hard pressed to find anyone on here that doesn't fall for their chickens. My name is Leslie, and I AM that crazy chicken lady!!

) I talk to them and sing to them and sit and hold nd rock them. Bring them treats and take walks with them.. I dont know what I would do if I were in your position I would go nuts , histerical attacks of tears. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. I do agree about culling the sick birds and watching for the next 2 weeks to see if anyone is sick. If you get thru 2 weeks and everyone is fine then noone caught it. And if noone caught it then yes you can bring future clean healthy birds into the flock. Remeber to quarantine any new birds to watch for illness before introducing to the others..

Good luck and keep us posted, I will keep you in my thoughts

OK everyone. I talked to the guy who sold me the bird. He said that they are fine and that it was just a type of cold. I isolated all my lil girls. Who are fine in every way sept for the smell and eye thing. I have my older girls in there coop and the young ones in a cage far away. IF I can do a closed coop and everyone if fine. CAN I eat the eggs?

First, they do not just have a cold. Chickens never just have a cold. You need to get rid of the symptomatic ones. Either give them back or euthanize. The others might never show symptoms and the eggs will be just fine to eat as long as they aren't on any kind of medication. If any of the others start showing symptoms, they will also need to be euthanized. As Dawg says, cull as necessary. You cannot keep the symptomatic birds or, you will be battling this illness for the rest of your chicken owning days.

aaand that is why i posted that. I trust yens. He told me that some of his girls show the same signs and he is giving them antibiotics and its just from being stressed from all the moving and back and forth stuff. I am getting rid of my sick girls and gonna keep my other ones and pray.

Sorry, it sounded in your post like he had changed your mind...whew. Scared me for a second. Sorry to sound so bossy...I was so afraid that you were going to keep them.

I'll be praying for you, your girls and your hens. I don't want to see you lose your babies and the girls lose their friends.

Take care..keep us posted on how you are doing.

oh I will, and thanks so much. We are going to tr and save the older girls. I did talk to a vet and he told me to bleach everything down in and out of the coop and change the bedding after the little hens are gone. Then just watch my older girls to see if they get sick. We shall see.
