Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two hours today. 14C with rain on and off all day, some of it heavy.
Day by day Sylph and Mow are coming to see Glais as the boss in all things bar extreme emergencies. If I went somewhere, they would follow. They don't do that anymore. There are lots of little signs; Mow swears at me if I crop check her. She doesn't move away, just bad language. Sylph will follow Glais out before Mow.

One problem with this, it's a common problem, is Glais makes warning calls for just about anything in the sky. A Jackdaw flying too close above him will have him running for cover. Unfortunately the hes, who know better and weren't bothered by the wild birds, except the Red Kite, now bolt to the coop with Glais. It was easier before when they would take cover under my chair or sit close by. It didn't take much to coax them back to foraging. All three under the coop is a different story.

Sylph's moulting isn't helping. She apparently does not want to get wet during moult. Normally she'll put up with a shower or two.

2nd photo from the the bottom should go in the caption contest. It looks like she's questioning you.

YES! Great photo for the caption contest. But I thought of something ‘slightly’ different.

when would you expect to get snow in each of your locations?
Honestly, in the 1990s and early 2000s this was an appropriate time. After say, 2006 it got pushed to the end of November and into December for the first snows. Honestly, these ones aren't sticking around very long so we might not have accumulation until December. 🤷

How is the cover across the field coming along? Is there anything else besides some currant bushes and baby apple tree that could serve?

Yesterday I got a text and a couple photos while I was at work, someone's chicken was wandering around the yard.

I got home after dark, didn't see it, but as I was bringing my house plants inside I noticed something moving on the box/compost pile. It was a full size chicken, "nesting" in a box.

It might belong to the guy who lives behind me. If it's still hanging around this afternoon I'll walk over, see if he's home.
