Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

More likely (my experience) the harassment is a territory, age or space thing.
Yes to all 3.
Extra cockerels coming to age are trying to get a flock. Rooster and uninterested hens chase the cockerels. The cockerels either sneak in at dusk or try bushes.
Pullets coming to age are chased by cockerels and lower ranking hens. Some pullets switch coops to get away.
I bought a couple small flat pack coops hoping broodies would use them instead of out in the bushes. About a week ago,a pair of sister pullets moved in one because of hens.

Wind, rain, low dark grey clouds hammering across the sky. Two hours mostly out of the coop extension for me as I attempted to do a bit of weeding etc. I can't write the same about Mow and Sylph who were not remotely interested in leaving shelter, never mind any digging.

Mow has hit the moult button hard. I hope she doesn't suffer as much with moulting as she did last year. Sylph is still moulting but she's eating, not much, and being out on the field would give her a much wider range of nutrients to help cope with the moult.

Glais and Sylph came out to eat when I arrived. Sylph sort of hovered around while Gais ate. At some point she thought it was okay to eat with him and that's what she did. I've got everything in that feed apart from live creatures. No I don't want to tell you how much it costs.

But, with Glais eating first, he's getting the best bits I assume. It doesn't really matter with regard to the nutrition because Spelt at 17% protein (and it's a complete protein) is the bulk of the feed.

Mow and Sylph like prawns so I took them some, maybe 4 whole prawns each. Today Glais was much better about not diving on anything that looked like food so Sylph and Mow got their share.

I've been tempted to view the moulting, combined with the weather as negative factors in getting the three of them cohabiting harmoniously.:p
I'm beginning to think closer confinement has been a great opportunity for Glais to learn about grumpy hens.:D He seems to be doing pretty well at it.

The noticeable down side is Glais isn't getting the exercise he needs. This was very apparent today when on being let out of the coop run he flew straight up the extended run, over the new fence and sort of ran and flew up and down the top of the field as soon as he had eaten.

How is the cover across the field coming along? Is there anything else besides some currant bushes and baby apple tree that could serve?
It isn't really. I can't do much about the field. "Do you mind if I plant this hardy hedge bush in the plot you're cultivating?" isn't going to go down well.
It's the extended run in which I'm trying to make improvements. I've got stuff in the ground. Some transplants didn't make it. Other stuff isn't going to do much until after the winter.
I'm looking at a cane construction that may work as cover but it won't do shelter as well.
