A-Frame Coop Finished...*** New Pics Added pg 5***

Here's an update on our A-frame.

Yesterday, the master carpenter (aka Dad or Grandpa to my kids

) stopped by to see the progress and how I had built it so far...needless to say, I built it totally different from how he would have told me and I could have saved time, money and labor

But, it is what it is! And after telling me what he would have done differently, he said that it was actually looking good.

First I finished the corner brace pieces (which were just the triangles I had cut from the top of the 2x4x8's. This pictures shows what I'm talking about...even though it was on part of the original frame. I screwed these onto each of the 26-2x4's.

I put up some 1x3x12 firring strips to attach the roof to...

Now for the roof, I'm using currugated plastic roofing (remember, we are hiding this in plain site...it's actually a "greenhouse!"

. One side is clear (SW side) and the other side is white. Yesterday, I finished the clear (then ran out of the special screws with gaskets and had to run back to the lumber yard for more) and today, I finished the white.

Clear...

In this next picture, you can see the 1x6x12's that we used to close off the peak with. It's not completely air-tight, but it is element tight...in other words rain, snow etc should stay out but there should still be some ventilation.

Another pic of the peak (which I caulked the seams and will be painting eventually)...

The last thing I did, was to start filling in the gaps at the bottoms of the 2x4's with rocks. Idon't want any coons or skunks digging under here! (I'm also going to close it off with 1 inch chicken wire...I would have used hardware cloth...but hubby bought it for me so I can't really complain!)

I'm also going to cover the ground/floor with chicken wire (I plan to deep-litter) and I still have a 1x6x12 board I'm going to install around the edges to keep the shavings in.

My last attempt of the afternoon, was to start framing the front and the door....

What you can't see is my husbands skil saw....I sawed through the cord...

Yup...I'm dead!

My hubby has so far, stood back and let me build this thing (he helped me with screwng the peak down..I couldn't reach it!) but I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to use his tools anymore...

....

So that's it for today!

Awesome job! I love A frames.

The good thing about sawing through the cord on hubby's saw...next time you tell him you're using his tools, he'll be right there to help;)

That is a great looking coop Kelley! Congrats to you for getting this far without incident. I'm sure you dh will forgive you for the cord. If not, maybe he'll offer a helping hand. I surely couldn't have gotten as far as you did on my own. That's quite an accomplishment you should be proud of.

Well,I'm still alive! The cord is fixable on my husbands skil saw...and I'll be getting more help with the power tools!

To be fair to my hubby, he would have helped me with this whole thing.... but I really wanted to see if I could do it. He's such a great guy

Well, on my side, it was the boyfriend who sawed through the power cord on my circular saw... just so you know it goes the other way around, too. I made him fix it, though - I have enough electrical projects without adding one.

Nice coop. Very very sturdy. Especially with that roof slope, you should be good even in a snow dump from a serious nor'easter.

Are you going to use it as a greenhouse, too? Some people do greenhouse + chickens. You could build a raised bed with chicken wire around it to keep the chickens out of it. You could probably raise kale, chard, and some other hardy plants year-round in Massachusetts.

WOW!

You did a GREAT job! I did build a rabbit hutch last year and I was soooo proud! Hubby said I did good, but he would have done it all different too. I haven't killed any power tools yet, but while cutting a tree down with the chainsaw last week I accidently dropped the giant tree on my wheelbarrel! Now the only thing my wheelbarrel holds are flowers after dh screwed the pieces together--haha!
