Me and a friend of mine (who also want to get chickens some day) sometimes engage in a little thought experiment: If one were to buy a flock of chickens with the weirdest-looking and most diverse breeds, which breeds would one pick?

That is, don't just pick one breed that looks the weirdest, but pick weird-looking breeds that look totally different from one another.

Another "rule" of this thought experiment is that the flock has to "work". It has to be a healthy flock. So, one rooster per 5-15 hens, preferably no mixing of huge and tiny breeds, etc. Also, you have to be able to obtain the birds reasonably easy where you live. So possibly no breed that only exists in a tiny part of Asia.

Furthermore: Feel free to include pictures in this thread!

Okay, my personal thoughts:

- I'm gonna go with "average sized" chickens in my whole flock.

- For rooster, I think I'll go with a rumpless Araucana. Rumplessness looks so weird. And I want it to have the full regalia regarding headgear: Beard, muff, tufts, the works. Color doesn't really matter.
Alternatively: A Swedish Black rooster with a purple comb. They are weird, and metal, and beautiful.

- Two Silkies. That's a no-brainer.

- Two Turkens. That's also a no-brainer. (I'm going with two of everything, to reduce risk of bullying).

- Actually, no Showgirls. Showgirls are in between silkies and turkens, so that would kind of ruin the diversity a little.

- Two Cochin hens. Or maybe Orpingtons. What I'm looking for is walking perfect spheres. And I realize I'm leaving the "average size" territory here, so let's start calling my flock "average/large".

- Two Malay hens, or some similar very gamey looking game breed.

- Two Sultan hens. Polish would be okay; anything with ridiculous headgear, really. But Sultans have feathered legs, so...

- A wide diversity of colors. Doesn't matter which breed has which, but one pure white, one jet black, and so on. If possible, a lot of lacing and banding.

So, in pictures, my flock could look like this:

Hmm, that would make eleven in all... Maybe too many? I need to have room for their offspring too... Maybe I'll just get one of each...?

Oh well. What are your submissions?

This is kind of sort of what I have. I didn’t set out to include unusual traits purposefully, but I acquired a more or less random flock selected by others. I got eggs from my mother-in-law’s flock of many breeds, a hippie girl’s flock from an orchard that turns out to have had a lot of weird stuff, and a hatchery assortment. I have a few “normal” chickens, but most have one or more: muffs, pea combs, feathered feet, naked necks, silkie feathers, crests. I have many colors and patterns, and these are only the ones I’ve hatched from elsewhere. Mine haven’t yet quite begun the next generation yet, though we’re getting close!

I value the diversity and find it appealing (and hope to find customers who do, too.) I like the rumpy, small-combed look of the Easter Egger types; I do plan to select for that and in general for size so the birds are worth eating, too, but for everything else, I enjoy the wide variety.

My large and small chickens don't mind mixing, so I would have

white showgirls-no brainer 4 hens

Frizzled cochins- fluffy balls of feathers 3 hens

Malays- tall 1 rooster 1 hen

Easter Eggers- adds a dash of color in the eggs and the plumage 1 rooster, 3 wheaten hens.

1 rumpless EE hen

Ayam Cemani- the neutral colored chicken who stands out 1 rooster

Bantam Cornish- a bit wider then they are tall 1 hen

Japanese bantam hen

Sicilian buttercup hens 3 to bad no more space for a rooster

d'Anvers- no strange flock is complete without the cutest kind of chicken in the world! Plus they are great at flying. Comes in a variety of colors. Mille' Fluer, bb red, silver quail, and cuckoo hens, one of each. And one Red pyle rooster! You can tell I am a little biased.

So, 21 hens to 4 roosters
Eh. My hen:roo ratio is worse.
Anyway, I would never buy any of these except d'Anvers

A fun thing to think about!

I'd have to have a Scots Dumpy (chicken-breed-focus-scots-dumpy.1134508) for their little short legs and my Scottish heritage.
Wishlist Scots Dumpy.jpg

Icelandics because each one is different, they have good foraging tendencies
Wishlist Icelandics.jpg

Vorwerks just because I like their coloration
Wishlist Vorwerk.jpg

Brabanters I think they're beautiful, love the muffs and top knots
Wishlist Brabanter.jpg

Brakel, again mostly for looks (the roosters are stunning)
Wishlist Brakel.jpg

Andalusian, might not be 'weird' but I've always wanted one

I'm sure there are a lot more but that's enough day dreaming for now. Fun idea for a thread @Henrik Petersson :)
