A gallon of sugar water-Warning-Do Not Read While Eating or Drinking

I have a hummer that comes and hovers in front of my office window and stares at me. He flits back and forth a bit so it looks like he is trying to see what all I am doing.

It is probably the same one who follows me around the yard.

Oh Maple, MAPLE! Did your mama never teach you NOT to combine kool-aid and more than one kid at the same time???
It's no wonder you're losing (lost?) your mind. Kool-aid is for kids ages 12 and up only and then only if they are about to go to a neighbor's house to play.

Happy Birthday to your DD!

I thought it was bad to give them just plain sugar water, not having the right (whatever) they needed from plants. That's why I was asking. I wouldn't bother with dyeing the water, that's what the red feeders are for!

Not that I know of. We subscribe to Birds and Blooms magazine, that has a special section on hummers. Seems like that's what most people use.
They're not getting all their substanance from the feeders. They have the flowering bushes for that.

Probably too late to put them out this year. Here we put the feeders out about mid-March. I'll look at the chart later to see when it's recommended you put them out in Kentucky.
I love the new feeders we bought this year. They have wide mouth jars, so they are easier to clean, a perch that runs all the way around and 12 holes for feeding. Not that two of them can share the same feeder without fighting about it.

I just went and filled the feeders. All is right in our little hummers world again.

we had grape and orange kool aid and watermelon and hot dogs and burgers on the grill and good ol mac n cheese...and potato chips.

then cake...marbled with strawberry filling...with lil pet shop toy decorations and some nilla icecream.

Hey maple? Can you come to meet me now and bring a few hamburgers and some mac-n-cheese? Thanks

Shelley, I just looked at the migration map. Looks like you should put your feeders out around the first of April.
Here's the recipe for making their food:

http://howtoenjoyhummingbirds.com/hummingbird feeder food recipe.htm

You take the feeders down two weeks after you see the last hummer in the fall. This helps to feed any latecomers.

We have the feeders hanging on the outside of the screened porch. They're alot of fun to watch.

I wonder if you could add vitamins or something to it? I know I've heard that it's not good for them, but that could have been the 'whoever' people just being dramatic again.
