Yesterday started out with six 8-week Olive Egger chicks in a "predator-proof" pen. Last evening ended with 1 hawk and 1 tiny carcass in the not-so-predator-proof chick pen.

My DH entered the pen with Mama Hawk and rescued the two remaining alive-but-petrified chicks, moving them to a pen off the ground. I was disappointed with the loss of the other 3 chicks, since I figured Mama Hawk had been carrying them up to her nest all day....only to find the 3 little chicks had somehow escaped the pen with the hawk in it....skipped right past the peafowl pen....and made a new entryway into the turkey pen where they were standing underneath the 50 lb Tom. I swear they were singing "nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nahnah"; just daring that Mama Hawk to take on their new friend.

My free ranging bantams would do a similar thing whenever a fox tried to get them. They would go and roost on my beagle pens just daring the fox to come closer.
