a gentle rant about prayer

I'm sorry you took my comment to mean praying-type people never help, that's not where I was going. But thanks for being so cool about the misunderstanding, a lot of folks would have blown their top.

I do think that it can be appropriate when leading a prayer for a group that could be of many faiths so they understand why a certain adoration, praise or request to God is made. But I also agree that when it becomes preaching down or in some cases raising oneself up it is inappropriate.
 
Prayer gives people hope. If you feel the need to pray go for it. Do it however you want. Just don't let Jesus take the wheel. he might be busy somewhere else.
