Hello! {oh I'm so excited!}
Thought I'd introduce myself and get started here on BYC. {what a fantastic resource you all are!}
I'll start by filling out the newbie questionairre:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
-Yes! I am new to chicken husbandry, though I have always wanted to own a farm of my own. We took the plunge and bought our little chickies the day before Easter this year.
THAT was a very exciting day.
Even the hubster was like a little kid in a candy store. Of course, cuteness like this is hard to resist.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-We have 8 chicks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
-1 Rhode Island Red named Pedro (
I know, but my son insisted even though she's a GIRL chicken!)
-1 Buff Orpington named Tang (hubby's choice.....I suppose her coloring does resemble the infamous orange drink)
-1 Golden Sex Link named Zip
-1 Black Sex Link named Twilight (no....not after the silly vampire show)
-1 Moran named Lorelei
-1 Golden Lace Wyandotte named Lady Wellington
-and 2 little banty chicks named Pippin and Reepicheep
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
-I came across it while googling how to build a chicken coop. {thank goodness!}
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
-Oh my goodness! How long do you have?
I love to craft so I pretty much do ANYTHING craft related. In fact, I just started my own business in November of '08 so I could put all my crafting to good use. {you should check out my shop online at www.lemonadesun.etsy.com}
Aside from crafting, I love to letterbox, make things (most anything) from scratch including my latest love: cold processed soaps, I would really love to be an excellent gardener like my mother was, alas, I have discovered my not-so-green thumb
As a family, we love to go camping, hiking, play in the river, travel, host massive parties, hang out with our friends............oh there's a million other things too. Now we can add chicken wrangling to the list
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
-Let's see, I am the wife (14 years so far) of the "Friendly, Neighborhood Wheelguy" and mother to 4 amazing kiddos: Emily (14), Eli (nearly 13), Brielle (10) and Zeb (6). We live in a small town in the middle of rural grass seed farmland out here in Oregon and I LOVE it! We have 2 dogs named Peanut and 'Quita {who would chomp a chicken if they had half a chance, but show a great deal of self control when faced with the consequence of getting their hineys whacked by Mom and a rolled up newspaper!}
We love life and adventure and we are trying to honor our pioneer heritage by becoming more self sufficient as a family. {if you are interested, I just started a new blog about this very thing at www.caferustica.blogspot.com and I would love some more readers}
I suppose that's us in a nut shell. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and gleaning tons of info from your wisdom. Thank you for sharing with all of us newbies. I know we all appreciate it.
